Benton Harborâs most prominent political activist is Rev Pinkney. He is at present imprisoned, framed on misdemeanor recall petition signature gathering charges, but sentenced to felony, 2 1/2 to 10 years, time for organizing community opposition to the take over of his town by Whirlpool Corporation, whose business plan results in the disposition of Benton Harbor's mostly Black residents.
Pinkney was recently moved to a remote prison in Marquette, Michigan, 483 miles and 7 1/2 hours from Benton Harbor. Originally he was confined at Lakeland Correctional Facility, 103 miles and 1 1/2 hour drive from Benton Harbor.
Reverend Pinkney recently got out word that he is being abused at Marquette and fears for his well-being. Joe Perry of the defense committee gives the details , the back story and an analysis of the displacement of Black residents taking place in Benton Harbor.
