On The Commons is a weekly radio show dedicated to discussing the many issues surrounding mandatory homeowner associations, the fastest growing form of residential housing in the nation.

The concept of common ownership developments may have started out with the best of intentions, and the first models appear to have been fairly benign, but things have changed since those days. Over the past forty years, as mandatory membership associations became more common place in residential America, the many problems and abuses associated with them have triggered the need for legislative intervention. In fact, the laws regulating associations are constantly evolving. But what are these laws designed to do? Are they empowering associations or are they protecting housing consumers?

On The Commons with me this week are Frank Short and Pia Trigiani. Frank, a friend and frequent guest On The Commons, is an attorney and advocate for individual property rights. Pia is an attorney with the firm of Troutman and Sanders in McLean, Virginia. She represents homeowner associations and is active in drafting legislation pertaining to condominiums and property owner's associations. Please join us On The Commons, this Saturday, February 7, 2004. We'll be talking about bills currently working their way through the legislature and how they will affect homeowners, condo owners and housing consumers in Virginia.
