Chartered Engineer David Guinness in conversation - loosely entitled Whatever Happened To British Technology As names like Ferranti, Plessey, Marconi, Mullard, Racal, GEC, Thompson, Decca, ICL and Pye fade into history David gives his opinion of why that is. Along the way he explains how inequality was built into the very structure of his school, Eton College, where he was beaten with the cane etc. but never really understood why. After Eton he joined the Guards as an officer but whilst they were supposed to uphold the Christian maxim of loving your neighbour how did that sit with killing your neighbour in the army? Davids uncle was Sir John Slessor, Marshall of the Royal Air Force, a cousin of his mothers was Lord Charles Portal of Hungerford who was Marshal of the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain, his godmother was the granddaughter of British Prime Minister in the 1830s and 1840s Sir Robert Peel, his Godfather Sir Charles Doughty was a Tory MP. He then got a job in engineering working for the Advanced Projets Department of Hawker Siddley Dynamics at Hatfield designing the worlds first laser and infra-red guided missile guidance systems. He was headhunted over to the US to work on the space programme in the 1960s but found it terribly boring and went on to do a business degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. David believes engineers have been chased out of Britain because people like Sit Clive Sinclair and himself are considered a threat to the Establishment and that making Britain the centre for the development of tidal energy would bring them back. He has no faith whatever in the City of London bankers though to deliver loans needed to foster talent.
