The Northwest Rebellion of 1885 is generally seen as a combined uprising of Metis and Native Canadians, of Louis Riel, Poundmaker and Big Bear leading to heavy repression by the John A. Macdonald government.
That is a myth, and the tragic fact is that the indigenous leadership had their own independent demands and peaceful tactics. John A. exploited the 1885 crisis to criminalize and crush Big Bear, Poundmaker and their people.
