Dr. Dan Gottlieb— "Quadriplegia: A Struggle to Live"
Sept. 21, 2023, 4:36 a.m.
Originally Broadcast: April 12, 2006
Letters to Sam:A Grandfather’s Lessons on Love, Loss and the Gifts of Life
For most people, the desire to be known exceeds the desire to be loved. Who we are as individuals, how we reckon with our personal abilities and disabilities the topic of this edition of Radio Curious, a conversation with my friend Dr. Dan Gottlieb.
Dan Gottlieb, a clinical psychologist who lives and works near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania lives with quadriplegia, paralyzed from the neck down as a result of an automobile accident in 1979. He is the host of “Voices in the Family,” a weekly public radio program originating from WHYY in Philadelphia and the author of two articles a month in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Because of his physical condition, Dan thought he may not live to see his young grandson Sam grow to be man. When Sam was diagnosed with a severe form of autism several years ago, Dan decided to write a series of letters to his grandson.
His book “Letter’s to Sam: A Grandfather’s Lessons on Love, Loss and the Gifts of Life,” is a collection of the thirty-two intimate and compassionate letters sharing Dan’s thoughts, observations and experiences gained from his 27 years with quadriplegia, and his professional life as a clinical psychologist.
Dr. Dan Gottlieb and I visited by phone from his in mid April 2006.
The books Dr. Gottlieb recommends are “Eat, Pray and Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything, Across Italy, India and Indonesia,” by Elizabeth Gilbert, and “Life of Pi,” by Yann Martel.
John Cage Reading "Time (Three Autokus)" (1988)
Sept. 21, 2023, 4:10 a.m.
"All Things Cage" is a weekly program featuring conversations between Laura Kuhn, Director of the John Cage Trust, and Cage experts and enthusiasts from around the world. If youd like to propose a guest or a topic for a future program, write directly to Laura at lkuhn@johncage.org.Laura Kuhn presents the first recording of John Cages Europera 5, preceded by her reading Recollections of the Premiere Performance by Yvar Mikhashoff. This recording of Europera 5 was produced by Brian Brandt and released on the Mode Records label as Mode 36 in 1995, with performers Yvar Mikhashoff, Martha Herr, Gary Burgess, Jan Williams, and Don Metz. Europera 5 is the last and most diminutive of Cages operas " preceded by Europeras 1 & 2 (1984-1987) and Europeras 3 & 4 (1991) " and was instigated by pianist Yvar Mikashoffs desire for a small, more practical and portable, and more easily performed work in the series, which had its premiere in Buffalo at the North American New Musical Festival on April 12, 1991.

The 'Slow Motion Execution' of Julian Assange
Sept. 20, 2023, 3:13 a.m.
Chris Hedges is the former Middle East bureau chief of the New York Times, a Pulitzer Prize winner and acclaimed author. Craig Murray was the British ambassador to Uzbekistan and now is one of Britain’s most important human rights campaigners.
Thanks to The Real News Network for broadcasting Hedges’ conversation with Craig Murray on September 15, 2023. That’s a date of great importance as the extradition of Julian Assange from Great Britain to the US might be only weeks away.
Hounded by US law enforcement and its allies for more than a decade, Assange has been stripped of all personal and civil liberties for the crime of exposing the extent of US atrocities during the War on Terror. In the intervening years, it's become apparent that the intent of the US government is not only to silence Assange, but to send a message to whistleblowers and journalists everywhere on the consequences of speaking truth to power.
My thanks go out to all: Chris Hedges, former war reporter and acclaimed author, most recently of The Greatest Evil is War. Craig Murray was the British ambassador to Uzbekistan, and removed from his post after he made public the use of torture by the Uzbek government and the CIA.
And many thanks to The Real News Network. You can find this conversation on YouTube under the title: The 'slow motion execution' of Julian Assange. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x9Bltb7ZYE

Promo: Fossils
Sept. 18, 2023, 1:39 p.m.
This is the PROMO for our FOSSILS episode!
Fossils
Sept. 18, 2023, 1:39 p.m.
Learn about fossils in this action packed episode of The Children's Hour that comes with a Learn-Along guide that meets and cites National (US) Education Standards.
The Kids Crew took a summer field trip to a secret fossil dig site located in an active mining quarry in the mountains of New Mexico. They spoke with the paleontologists working to extract 350 million year old fossilized marine creatures and plants.
Then, Kids Crew member Amadeus Menendez is a longtime volunteer at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. To help us understand how fossils are made, he spoke with NMMNHS educator Mike Sanchez to learn more about how fossils develop, and dispel myths about what constitutes a fossil.
We also spoke with Dr. Emily Lindsey, shes the Assistant Curator and Excavation Site Director at theLa Brea Tar Pits and Museumin Los Angeles, California. The tar pits perfectly preserved animals, plants, people and anything that fell into them over the last 60,000 years. They have found long extinct animals, like giant camels and sloths, as well as humans, insects, and critters who couldn't escape the sticky, oily tar.
This episode was recorded at a super secret fossil dig site in the mountains of New Mexico, at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science, and the Sunspot Solar Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Many thanks to Amanda Cantrell and Thomas Suazo from Badlands Scientific Expeditions for taking our Kids Crew on the fossil field trip.
We had production help from the Kids Crew & their parents, as well as Amadeus Menendez. Production help came from Eli Henley and our Senior Producer, Christina Stella. Katie Stone is our Executive Producer. Our Learn-Along guide was written by Jonathan Dunski with help from Lorraine Archibald.

WINGS #24-23 Gaslighting and Philosophy
Sept. 18, 2023, 12:40 a.m.
Prof. Manne vividly describes the plot of the play from which two films titled Gaslighting were derived. The husband will not brook the slightest contradiction and he forces his wife to pretend to agree with everything he says. Manne draws a parallel with certain sexist behaviours by academic philosophers - then suggests a useful response and points out that the tools of philosophy are also available to people from stigmatized groups.
Kate Manne, Assoc. Prof. of Philosophy at Cornell, focuses on moral philosophy (esp. metaethics and moral psychology), and feminist and social philosophy. Her books include Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny, and Entitled: How Male Privilege Hurts Women. Forthcoming: Unshrinking: How to Face Fatphobia. She publishes in mainstream periodicals, and her Substack newsletter is called More to Hate. Her talk Philosophy and Gaslighting: It's Not All In Your Mind was featured in the online conference What Good is Philosophy?, a fundraiser for the Ukrainian Academy hosted by the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. The conference was organized and moderated by Aaron James Wendland, Asst. Prof. of Philosophy Kings College London, co-editor of the book Wittgenstein and Heidegger, and a producer for the CBC Radio series Ideas.

Global Super Rain: the new face of climate change
Sept. 17, 2023, 9:08 p.m.
At the end of summer 2023, extreme rains struck different countries around the world. Its super shocking. Over ten thousand people died and property damage is enormous. Is this the new stormy climate James Hansen warned about? We investigate with American extreme rain and flash flood expert Jonathan Gourley from the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory. But Australian climate lecturer Andrew King cautions not all floods are sure signs of global warming. Then my report about insidious smog killing millions every year, starting in the womb.
The Functions of Fascism
Sept. 17, 2023, 8:53 p.m.
With the decline of American hegemony abroad, and the decline of the US Dollar, coupled with the declining ability of the Fortune 500 companies to extract superprofits at the expense of the Global South, it is all but inevitable that fascism will rise once more in Europe and North America. Fascism is capitalism in decay and the capitalist class in Europe and America will seek to maintain its power and profits by superexploiting European and American workers. Working class people must be prepared to defend themselves against the increasingly brutal methods the capitalists will use to this end.
Commentary on violence in Calgary
Sept. 17, 2023, 8:36 p.m.
Police in Calgary and Sweden say they will lay charges against hoodlums who attacked Eritrean community festivals. How about Toronto, et. al?
Media coverage of the pogrom like attacks on established Eritrean festivals and events have created a false narrative of "two groups" fighting. Truth is Eritrean community organizations, legally established and part of the multi-cultural fabric of Canadian society have been the target of brutal pre-meditated attack by a shady organization calling itself the N'ahmedu ("to-the-death") "disrupters.'' Most police forces in Canada and elsewhere have murmured about "investigations" and politicians have run for cover.
Something is haywire. At least Councilman Dhaliwal of Calgary is asking why the police did not anticipate the attacks and protect the lawful gatherings of Eritrean Canadians.
