Episode 533: That's not a real Saison

Sept. 11, 2023, 6:54 p.m.
SUDS Episode – One of our co-hosts passed away about a year ago and we decided to host a episode in tribute to Good ol Boy Caperton. We still really miss him and drinking beer with him. He was fanatical about Saison style beers and was very polarized about his feedback. Brewers feared his wrath if they ventured too far off his declarative boundaries of a true Saison. Some of these we got to enjoy with Caperton before he passed away and others we wish we could have shared with him.

Falling Into Autumn

Sept. 11, 2023, 4:11 p.m.
Its fall in the northern hemisphere and we explore the science behind autumn. Equinoxes happen in the spring and fall, and each year those special days give our planet exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night at the equator. At the Chichen Itza pyramid in Yucatan, Mexico, a snake is visible climbing down the steps only on spring and fall equniox. We also hear from 5th graders at Eugene Field Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico describing how perspective can change history. They teach us about the traditional fall holidays of Labor Day (US), Mexican Independence Day (Mexico), and Columbus Day (US), and how each of these holidays feels very different based on the point of view in history a person takes. Mrs. Allison Hawks taught these intrepid students back in 2014 for a Title 1 School Project with The Childrens Hour. Filled with great music, this episode educates, entertains, and engages kids of all ages. Join us as we fall into autumn on The Childrens Hour. This episode was recorded and produced at the Sunspot Solar Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Christina Stella is our Senior Producer, Katie Stone is our Executive Producer. Many thanks to Alli Hawks and her 2014 fifth grade class at Eugene Field Elementary School for joining us on the show. 2023 The Childrens Hour Inc.

Sonic Cafe #355/One For The Road

Sept. 8, 2023, 5:20 p.m.
Sonic Café, Let the good times roll from the Cars, I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 355. This time the Sonic Café has fun with America’s love for our cars. The technology may be shifting to electric, but whether you drive a giant SUV or a friendly little Leaf we’re all part of one giant car culture. Comedian Jose Sarduy steps up to the mic, to share his experience of driving a car that makes people angry, a Toyota Prius, and his audience wholeheartedly agrees. Our car-centric mix is pulled from 40 years. Listen for Cake, The Cure, blues man Joe Bonamassa, REO Speedwagon, Tom Waits talking about his Pontiac, the Plain White T’s and more. Then a big Sonic Café welcome to our newest sponsor, listen for Honest Ed’s Used Cars, where every car is backed by an iron clad guarantee so comprehensive they don’t feel the need to put it writing. Ahem. And finally a pop culture clip pulled from Seinfeld as we present, the washer fluid is NOT fine. All that and more as the Sonic Café celebrates America’s crazy car culture, from our little radio café way out here in the Pacific Northwest, here’s the Arctic Monkey’s with One For The Road, and we’re the Sonic Café.

Sonic Café, that’s The Smoke Gift, Beef Terminal music from 2014. So hey welcome to our little coastal radio café, this time the Sonic Café takes yet another stroll down Ambient Ave., featuring songs from another dimension, as we present a curetted mix of ambient, electronic and down tempo tracks selected from 44 years. Kick back and listen for Deep Forest, Bill Nelson, Luomo, Jean Michel Jarre, Carbon Based Lifeforms, the Alpha Wave Movement and many more. We’ll also sprinkle in the poetry of Lana Del Rey, plucked from her 2020 spoken word album Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass, which peaked at number 19 on Billboard’s US top album chart and number 3 on the US vinyl album chart. Since her musical beginnings, Del Rey has been inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg, and her art fits nicely into this mix. So plug in your ear buds and take another trip down Ambient Ave. from the Sonic Café, located way out here in the Pacific Northwest at the corner of Ambient Ave. and Beatnik Blvd. Here’s music from Blue States and we’re the Sonic Café.

Dr. Gene D. Cohen– "Do We Get Smarter As We Age"

Sept. 8, 2023, 2:04 a.m.
Originally Broadcast: April 18, 2006 The Mature Mind: The Positive Power of the Aging Brain Do people over a certain age necessarily loose mental acuity? According to Dr. Gene Cohen, the answer is “no.” Dr. Cohen, a psychiatrist and gerontologist has determined that certain genes are activated by experience as we age, allowing our personalities to grow and change. The brain has reserves of strength and agility that compensate for the effects of aging on its other parts. Dr. Cohen has found that the information processing in the 60 to 80 year old brain achieves it’s greatest density and reach. He explains these and other developing concepts in brain research in his book, “The Mature Mind: The Positive Power of the Aging Brain.” I spoke with Dr. Cohen in March 2006 from his office on Aging, Health & Humanities, in Washington D.C., where he is the Director. We began our conversation with his description of the importance of the role of creativity. Gene Cohen recommends, “Tuesdays with Morrie: A Young Man, An Old Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson,” by Mitch Albom.
