Feminist Theology and Women in the Muslim World (TWO of TWO) Archive

March 15, 2023, 12:56 a.m.
This is the conclusion of Dr. Riffat Hassan’s extraordinary feminist lecture on the story of Adam and Eve, a story that forms the basis for the oppression of women in Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Plus my interview with her about her radical re-interpretation of the significance of Eve’s acceptance of the apple.
Dr. Riffat Hassan is a Muslim theologian from Pakistan who opposes the Islamic view of the inferiority of women. She says that since anti women legislation and custom are enacted in the name of theology, it is necessary to study the Koran and critique the source. In the original text, says Hassan, women are neither inferior nor sinful. Adam is not a man’s name – it is the word for human. In fact in the Koran the original being created by god is feminine, a fact that is concealed in all translations.
Riffat Hassan says the original meaning was altered by later writings, the so-called Hadiths. These are quotes attributed to the prophet Mohammed and passed on by people who say they heard him tell the story. And it is here – and only here, in the Hadiths that the story of creation of woman from Adam’s rib is told six times. The Hadiths say that woman is secondary because she was made of Adam’s rib and sinful since she is responsible for the expulsion from paradise. Riffat Hassan was Professor of Religious Studies and Humanities at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. She received her PhD from Durham University, UK, in 1968 and has taught in many institutions, including Oklahoma State University and Harvard Divinity School. Riffat Hassan has since retired after 33 years of teaching in the US. She gave courses not only in theology but also in literary criticism, Shakespeare, Romantic Poets, international relations and foreign policy. However through all her academic accomplishments and to this day she was and is a human rights activist on behalf of women.

Iran and Saudi Arabia: The multi-polar world continues

March 14, 2023, 9:48 p.m.
The Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia have resumed diplomatic relations and committed themselves to a process that may bring some peace and stability to West Asia. Notably, the key role of mediator was played by China. The U.S. seems somewhat shocked; the same with Israel. And Western media has reacted with confusion. The multi-polar world continues on its way. Remember China offered a plan for peace to Russia and Ukraine. And what has NATO offered? Zafar also provides a clear account of the present crisis in Pakistan, where Imran Khan is waging a struggle for elections and the return of the country to a democratic path free of Western influence.

WINGS #48-22 LGBTQI+ in Kenya

March 13, 2023, 5:06 p.m.
After ten years of appealing, Kenya's Supreme Court has ruled that organizations with words like lesbian and gay in the title are allowed to register as NGOs. However same-sex sexual relations have been illegal since the British occupation. This win has set off a frightening backlash against already marginalized sexual minorities. Activist and advocate Esther Nelima gives a detailed portrait of the hazards for sexual minorities. She says people have a right to express their feelings but not when it harms others' rights, and that holy books don't only talk about sex they talk about love. Clips from the banned lesbian film Rafiki are included.

Episode 2023.09.00. The Day the GOP Died & Episode 2023.09.01. There is no Gun Debate

March 12, 2023, 6:57 p.m.
Class War Battlefield Podcast Episode 2023.09.00 George Santos, An Analysis for the Ages and The day the GOP Died With Clips from Top Ten Trends Please Donate to keep CWB Alive! Donate to: CashApp $CWBPodcast & Paypal @CWBPodcast 12 Month Goals: 300 at $5 100 at $10 100 at $20 25 at $21+ I tried not to laugh my way through the opening segment to this podcast, a feat I was largely successful at! I did however bumble the order of the topics I wanted to discuss, nevertheless be prepared to learn about how black culture impacts white racists and white conservatives who promote negative policies that are injurious to their communities; the primary topic in this episode though is not George Santos, he’s just a point for entry into the reality that in the 1960s the GOP as a party died. I may speak on this topic again in the future, but this point is discussed at some length in this episode. I speak about the attempt to save the GOP by Eisenhower (that may be a fanciful thought by itself but considering books like Rule & Ruin, it may also be closer than truth than fiction). Class War Battlefield Podcast Episode 2023.09.01 Another Gun Violence Episode, There is No Gun Debate in This Country With Clips from democracy now and the real news network Please Donate to keep CWB Alive! Donate to: CashApp $CWBPodcast & Paypal @CWBPodcast 12 Month Goals: 300 at $5 100 at $10 100 at $20 25 at $21+ I really don’t like episodes like this. The depth which I feel these episodes is indescribable, they impact me on so many intellectual levels that I literally feel on fire when recording them. With that said, here is what this podcast speaks about. The title literally is taken from the opening minutes in the podcast, unlike many episodes where I have a topic sentence and title before hand, I just knew this was going to deal with Gun Violence and the dumbness within the “Gun debate” within this country. Here I talk about what the role of the citizen is inside a functioning Democracy and after touching on some other smaller topics, I move into the why aspect of the “debate”; why is there a rich gun culture in the United States. Music Used in the opening, Curtis Mayfield’s Think, Brandy’s The Definition and Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues If you have any questions, comments or concerns please contact me at vphiamer.adis.ogaarwa@outlook.com Follow me on Facebook @ClassWarBattlefieldPodcast, on Twitter @VphiamerAdisOgaarwa

An E-Bike Loaves and Fishes Story

March 11, 2023, 9:06 a.m.
"When I read in 2020 that Colorado ran a pilot program to give away just 13 e-bikes, I scoffed. What difference could that possibly make? Now I have to eat my bike helmet." - Wendy Ring, Cool Solutions Producer and Host. Turns out that mini-pilot laid the foundation for Denver's wildly successful e-bike program by proving that e-bikes cut car trips and emissions and that low income folks do want to ride them. Denver's program inspired a statewide program that's the largest in the US. And e, by the way, also stands for equity. The consistent emphasis on removing financial barriers to e-bikes is building a constituency to press for safe cycling infrastructure in neglected low income neighborhoods.
