Vallejo, California and Harpswell, Maine said No to the possibility of a six mile wide fireball engulfing their communities. But Oregon? Oregon is still flashing a little leg and batting its eyelashes at an LNG facility near Astoria. Before the 05 energy bill states had more rights when it came to the siting of highly dangerous things like LNGs being located within their borders. Unhappy about it? Call the Guv! 5. Developers' interests and environment interests met to sort out their land use differences. No thanks to either the Guv or the Sierra Club. 6. Health care advocates may be able to get a few initiatives on the ballot this November. Prescription drug discounts, staffing levels at nursing homes and a constitutional amendment declaring health care a right could make it to your mailbox. It's fire season again. Many Western states got so wound up over "illegal" immigrants this spring, that they completely forgot that undocumented people make up a large part of the firefighting work force - after all, it's a dangerous job... 7. As I was saying... Last night in Arizona, wildfires gobbled up a thousand acres. This is near the very wealthy enclave off Oak Creek Canyon. Fire crews protecting the multimillion dollar houses may have found themselves rather short-staffed. 8. Farther down Irony Lane: Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick is resigning and going to work at Goldman Sachs. He's leaving because he is hacked that he didn't get the Treasury Secretary job that John snow left behind. Instead, Henry Paulson got the gig. And where did Bush get Paulson? Found him under a rock at... wait for it... Goldman Sachs. 9. National security concerns may delay for months the release of a risk assessment report on a proposed LNG terminal at... .Astoria! I thought the Guv was supposed to be all over these dicey environmental situations... . 10. The body of a man who drowned in the Katrina flooding was just found the other day. A bit late in the game to still be finding bodies but the National Guard ahs been so busy over in Iraq making more of them. 11. Michael Chertoff's DHS got all kinds of hat email from New Yorkers complaining about the 40 percent cut in security spending. Funny isn't it how 'red' states got the goldmine and 'blue' states got the shaft... . 12. Cindy Sheehan is in Canada lending support to war resistors. (But before you start packing, remember this: Canada is the way it is because of Canadian. America is the way it is because of Americans. It is not enough to save your own arse; Americans owe it to themselves and the rest of the world to turn this country around.) 13. The Washington Post got its hands on a memo from Baghdad that flatly contradicts the rosy picture Bush painted of Iraq upon his return to drooling, slack-jawed somnolence at home. Unfortunately for Administration "explainers", the cable was signed 'Khalilzad' (his friends call him 'Zil'; no kidding) 14. Now that Karl Rove is off the hook (in every sense of the phrase), the Deus ex Machina of State is moving on to pardon Louis 'Scooter' Libby, thereby completing the firewall around Cheney. 15. The US Episcopal church ahs chosen a woman as its next leader. Katharine Jefferts Schori still has to be approved by delegate at the convention. The vote is usually backed by the bishops but this could be the proverbial crack in the faced. 16. Mayor Ed Favre of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi is not going to wear pants until his city gets a little love from FEMA. No. Mayor Ed is going without until the federal government does the right thing with regard to his neck of the woods. 17. The search for the two missing soldiers is on. No stone in Iraq will be left unbombed, no limb left behind until those brave boys are out of harms way. So far seven soldiers have been wounded, three insurgents killed, untold numbers of civilians traumatized and rendered homeless and destitute. The search party includes fighter jets, drones and dive teams (!?)... .True! 18. Italian prosecutors want to indict the American soldier who shot and the driver of leftist journalist Giulliana Sgrena's. (Picture the shooter back at command headquarters being berated for not nailing Guilliana... ) 19. The BBC websites features this intriguing request: "Are you a resident of Ramadi? We'd like to hear from you!" 20. In Northern Iraq - not to mention the rest of the country - a serious environmental crime is taking place. In a desperate move to dispose of millions of barrels of a refinery byproduct called "black oil", the government ahs been pumping it into mountain valleys and leaky reservoirs where they then set it on fire. 21. While Bush continues to waggle his toy sword at Iran, on the Farside of the world, Kim Jong Il actually has the nukes and he is all set to test fire an ICBM with a range of 4 thousand miles - enough to hit, oh, say, Alaska... 22. Hamas and Fatah are closer to working out their difference so they can go back to defending themselves from the Israelis. 23. Many South American leaders have talked about it but Evo Morales really does have an ambitious program to address poverty. The man is as good as his word. More public services, and better access to clean water are just the beginning. 24. Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao is kicking off yet another African trade tour with a visit to Egypt's Hosni Mubarak. Then he's on to Ghana, Angola, S. Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. 25. At least eight people have been killed in Nigeria. This isn't a matter of oil for a change. M-A-S-SO-B - the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra. The people in this southern part of the country are mostly Igbo and they have been trying to secede for years. There's no success like secedess, I always say. Are you listening, Cascadia?
