Hundreds of workers and their advocates gathered in Richmond, Virginia recently to confront the shareholders of Smithfield Packing, the largest pork processing company in the world, about labor abuses at their plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina.
Anchor intro:
Smithfield packing, the largest pork processor in the world, is located not far from Richmond, in Tar Heel, North Carolina. Smithfield bacon, ham and other products can be found at grocery stories across the city. The company, which reported $11.4 billion in sales in 2005, has been accused of wide-ranging labor and human rights abuses over the last decade at the Tar Heel plant, which employs thousands of workers. Because the company has not yet been held accountable, labor advocates launched a multi-city "Justice at Smithfield" campaign in June. Last week, organizers came to Richmond for the second time this summer to educate the community about the conditions at the plant. WRIR's Catherine Komp was there and files this report.
