The new Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, popularly known as Prachanda, will visit the United States this week as a part of the annual opening of the new General Assembly session at the United Nations.
Prachanda was elected Prime Minister just last month following the installation of the first-ever Constituent Assembly. He is the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist and a leader of the Peopleâs Liberation Army. The Peopleâs Liberation Army fought for more than a decade to end Nepalâs feudal monarchy and to make fair elections and a democratic government possible.

The election of a Constituent Assembly in Nepal was a historic event. With Prachandaâs bold leadership, the Nepali people made a big step forward in deciding their own future after long years of tyranny, misrule and political strife. Through this election and the long years of armed resistance that preceded it, the people of Nepal have won a victory in their struggle to be free from 240 years of autocratic monarchical rule and to establish a democratic society where the rights of all the people would be protected.
This is a unique opportunity to salute the Nepalese people for their glorious victory earned after a protracted battle with many sacrifices and deaths of countless martyrs. Social justice activists and organizations here in the U.S. have every reason to support Nepalâs right to pursue an independent policy in international relations without any interference or outside pressure from U.S. imperialism or its regional allies.
