Recently, the Department of Corrections in Washington, DC became one of a small handful of jurisdictions in the world to issue a policy on transgender people who are incarcerated. The new policy forbids discrimination, permits access to hormones, limits the use of strip searches and mandatory protective custody and creates the possibility of housing trans inmates by gender identity.
