Thomas Szasz examines the vague and unfalsifiable definitions of psychiatric "diseases".
He attacks the war on drugs, as well as prescription drug laws.
He argues that the cause of the health care crisis in the U.S. is the lack of medical decision-making by patients, as well as individuals not feeling the costs of their health-related decisions, thereby putting the costs on society.
He thinks that many Americans value security, health, and protection from themselves more than individual freedom and responsibility.
After his speech, Szasz answers some questions from the audience.
Then the 1994 Thomas S. Szasz Award for Oustanding Contributions to the Cause of Civil Liberties is given.
Szasz is very funny at times. He was 74 years old at the time of this speech. He makes several word blunders such as the transposition of two words, or saying the opposite of what he means, but they are understandable and can be corrected by the listener. The recording picked up a lot of noise from the microphone rubbing against his clothing.
