On The Commons is a weekly radio show dedicated to discussing the many issues surrounding mandatory homeowner associations, the fastest growing form of residential housing in the nation.

There is a lot of conflicting information about what housing consumers actually buy when purchasing a unit in a mandatory membership association. It is easy to understand why, where there is a homeowner association, the association would have control over common areas. What is not so easy to comprehend is when that dominion crosses the line onto individually owned property. Just where does the authority of the association end and that of the homeowner begin? Should individual owners expect units in associations to be their castles?

On The Commons with me this week is Ken Chadwick. Ken, a Washington DC area attorney, whose list of accomplishments includes being past president of the Washington Metropolitan Chapter of the Community Association Institute, past chair of CAI's Legislative Action Committee, past president of the CAI's Research Foundation and member of CAI's College of Community Association lawyers, presented a session at the CAI Law Seminar last February titled "Association Regulation vs. Homeowner Rights Inside the Home". Join us On The Commons this Saturday, December 13, 2003. We'll talk about whether there is a line between where the association ends and private ownership begins and we'll find out exactly where that line is.
