Out of the Woods - Show #312 - 4-2-16

March 26, 2016, 6:32 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

"Just tell people the truth, tell them the good and the bad..."

March 26, 2016, 1:07 p.m.
This year marks two milestone anniversaries in the long history of nuclear tragedy. Unlike all other kinds of disasters, where, after fires are put out, rubble cleared, and bodies buried, nuclear disasters continue to “keep on giving” long after those activities are completed. As one Russian doctor put it at a conference for the 20th anniversary of Chornobyl, "The accident is over. The catastrophe is just beginning." Such is the case with both Chornobyl and Fukushima. Both stand as stark reminders of the extraordinary downsides to the Nuclear Age, and offer lessons we ignore at our peril. Lucas Hixson, a radiation monitoring technician with Enformable Environmental Services, reports on his recent 10 day fact finding trip to "The Zone" where he trained with and worked along side the cleanup workers who, 30 years later, are still working to contain the radioactive rubble from spreading radiation further off site. The crippled, and now shut down nuclear power station, is the site of a huge construction project where the worlds largest movable arched building is being assembled prior to placement over the failing "sarcophagus"; radiation levels in some locations are still high enough to cause premature failure of structural materials. He tells the story of what lead up to the disaster; bureaucratic pressure to run a "safety" test and a failure to communicate to operators a weakness in control rod design, and the sacrifice of the Soviet workers who gave their lives and health to extinguish the raging fires that spread radiation across Europe and the Northern Hemisphere.

EU seeks regime change in Burundi

March 26, 2016, 10:38 a.m.
After an attempted coup and a period of hit-and-run terrorist attacks aimed at bringing down the elected government of President Nkurunziza, the Burundian situation has stabilized. The various political groups have negotiated unity and taken a stand against interference from Western capitals and Rwanda. Many international representatives have been to visit and made reports. The crisis mongering of NGOs and western media have been shown up. Yet the EU, under leadership from Belgium, the former colonial master, has decided to cut off all aid to Burundi. Lebeni Tazira says Burundi will be better off without the aid, which has never done anything to improve the lot of the people.

US has a lot to learn from Cuba

March 26, 2016, 10:35 a.m.
President Obama visited Cuba, met Cuban leaders, attended a baseball game and gave a couple of patronizing speeches about human rights and the road to economic development. It has been almost 100 years since an American President has been to Cuba, but the tone and presumption have not changed much, except that now Cuba is an independent country that values its sovereignty and respects international law. While Obama’s trip gave the impression that trade embargoes (imposed by Washington) would be lifted, many obstacles still exist on the American side. Cuba is well aware that the old habits of US hegemony have not changed.

#421 -- Humanitarian Intervention B.S.

March 26, 2016, 7:58 a.m.
Radovan Karadzic's conviction for genocide and war crimes brings to mind the US's disastrous "humanitarian Intervention" in Bosnia and Serbia in the 1990s--and more recent disastrous interventions in Libya and Syria. In almost every case in recent history, "humanitarian intervention" has been a pretext for aggression by a major power. Brief reflections by KD are followed by a fine talk, on the same subject, by NOAM CHOMSKY.

Parents and teachers faced down with determined direct action the Chicago Board of Education, forcing it to rescind its dictatorial order that a high school be opened in the building that housed their grammar school. Attorney Alverez lost her bid to be reelected in the March 2016 primary because of her record of covering up police crimes against Blacks and Hispanics which gained notoriety following the murder of Laquan McDonald and the forced release of the police video of the shooting. Alverez may also be involved in the on going conspiracy to obstruct justice connected to Police Commander Jon Burge, torture and the former Mayor, who was States Attorney prior to becoming the second Daley to rule in Chicago.

Dr. Norma Field on the Human Element

March 24, 2016, 12:18 p.m.
BACKGROUND: This year marks two milestone anniversaries in the long history of nuclear tragedy. Dr. Norma Field is professor emeritus from the University of Chicago Dept. of East Asian Studies. She is Japanese, and frequently returns for Japan for visits and conferences relating to nuclear issues. She will be reporting on her recent visit to Japan and the situation in the areas around the Fukushima disaster zone. In her presentation she questions U.S. industry and military radiation experiments on humans and the corruption of scientific and societal integrity integral to the development and continuance of nuclear arms and power.

"Bob"'s Coming to Take Me Away, HAHAAA!!!

March 24, 2016, 12:03 p.m.
Yes--Bob"'s Coming to Take Me Away, HAHAAAAA!!! Don't you hate it when the title gives away the whole plot? I've got even MOAR insanity for you! I did an extensive retool of the Mind 02 show (BSTF #473) and added some choice chunks to make a psychotic swill that will churn up chunks from the bottom of your brainpan! Featuring the CREEPIEST INSANITY SONG EVAR, "Psycho" by Eddie Nowak (not the one by some coarse, drunken redneck--this one is by the quiet REALLY CRAZY young guy). We've got Swelling Itching Brains, psycho-self-help albums by Dr Frances Stern and Dr Murray Banks (Jayne Mansfield's shrink who had a cabaret comedy act), a drug-scare LP called LSD: BATTLE FOR THE MIND where the T-square-straight narrator refers to them as "hah-loose-in-OH-jens." And the show is capped off with an excruciating 8:30 version of "They're Coming to Take Me Away, HAHAAAAA!!!" by Jello Biafra with LARD.
