Interview on "The Spaces Between; A project about the rest of us"

March 6, 2016, 1:27 p.m.
This week we're speaking with Josie and Nathan of the project "The Spaces Between; A project about the rest of us". This is a zine which is a compilation of interviews with anarchists who live in smaller towns, away from so called anarchist hot spots. In this zine, the interviewees illustrate what it is like to live outside of the spotlight in the anarchist culture and politic, further away from its attending benefits and downsides. These folks just yesterday finished touring with this zine, keep your eyes peeled for their next one though, which is tentatively scheduled for sometime later this year. You can read or download the full pdf of this zine and keep abreast of further doings at https://spacesbetweentour.wordpress.com/ ======= We'd like to make an announcement for folks interested in learning more about La ZAD, the many year land occupation against the Airport in Notre Dame de Landes, France, the expansion of the nearby seaport, and the world that it would bring by a diverse mixture of peoples in the Brittany region of France. We've conducted interviews with activists from NDDL a few times on the show. Well, now the writer's collective called Mauvaise Troupe has created a book on the subject that is available for free online and soon to be available in print. We at The Final Straw Radio would like to inform listeners that while this is by no means a definitive or objective view of La ZAD NDDL, it is an interesting and informative take on the land struggle and worth a perusal as food for thought. The text is recently translated by The Laboratory of Insurrectional Imagination and the text can be found online here: https://labofii.wordpress.com/2016/02/09/defending-the-zad-a-new-little-book-about-the-struggle-against-the-airport-and-its-world/ Playlist is here: http://www.ashevillefm.org/node/15538

Out of the Woods - Show #309 - 3-12-16

March 6, 2016, 1:03 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Press Conference - SEC Decides for Peace Activists vs Boeing

March 6, 2016, 10:06 a.m.
In front of The Boeing Company building, Peace Activists from the Antiwar Committee-Chicago, stock holders in The Boeing Company, announced that on February 5th, 2016, the Securities and Exchange Commission had overruled Boeing's Board of Directors in their favor. The Board of Directors had rejected their request that a resolution be presented at the next annual meeting. The resolution, if approved by other share holders, requires Boeing to provide information about weapons sales to Israel. The request was made in light of the world wide Boycott, Divest and Sanction Movement (BDS) targeting Israel for its war crimes and it's Occupation of Palestine; the Boeing Company has become a target for divestment due to its military and related sales to Israel. Shareholders would benefit from knowledge of the full scope of the sales in order to better assess the potential effect it could have on their investment. The Securities and Exchange Commission ordered Boeing's directors to allow the proposal be presented at this years annual meeting.

Kagame seized power by force

March 5, 2016, 9:56 p.m.
Dr. Theogene Rudasingwa, once a top figure in Kagame’s regime, explains how the RPF rigs the Rwandan system to enrich themselves. The peaceful campaign of Victoire Ingibire to challenge Kagame’s one-man rule has led to her imprisonment. Yet her courage, like that of Nelson Mandela, has made her the common cause of all who strive for democracy. There are new signs that opposition to Kagame’s ways is growing both in Rwanda and in neighboring states.

Pursuing Police Accountability - Ending the Code of Silence

March 5, 2016, 8:58 p.m.
Chicago native and law professor Craig Futterman founded the University of Chicago's Civil Rights and Police Accountability Clinic, the first of its kind in the nation, in a trashed out apartment in Stateway Gardens, then one of Chicago's most troubled public housing projects. He and his students have since sued the Chicago Police Department and the City winning civil rights suits on behalf of residents for police kidnapping, planting evidence, filing false charges and menacing a project resident with a running chain saw. Recently his law suit forced the release of the Laquan McDonald video, which the police and Mayor Rahm Emanuel had tried to suppress from the public for over a year, that forced the Cook County States Attorney to charge police officer Jason Van Dyke with first degree murder. He speaks about his research into and work in ending police impunity and the need to address the structural problems damaging and killing youth of color by changing the character of policing. He thinks there is a chance to do so based on models he has seen enacted else where. He is one of the leaders of a nation wide campaign to end police impunity.
