War, Peace & Climate Change - Questions and Answers

Nov. 10, 2015, 5:42 p.m.
After his talk at the Chicago Area Peace Action in October 2015 Professor Klare answered questions for almost an hour in an animated give and take. Here are the best exchanges on climate and war; and why the Defense Department takes climate change very seriously; that the Navy prepares to lose their bases around the world to sea level rise, and why the conservative government of England is upset at their powerful Governor of the Bank of England. He said publicly that fossil fuels pose a rising risk to banking and insurance. Also included is an fascinating exchange over Jared Diamond's book Collapse, and how it might apply to us today. Professor Klare spoke at the annual dinner of the Chicago Area Peace Action, on October 24, 2015. He is Five College professor of peace and world security studies and a prolific author. His areas of expertise are U.S. military policy, international peace and security affairs, the global arms trade, and global resource politics. He made a very convincing argument about the need to dramatically limit fossil fuel use and keep warming below 2 degrees celsius.

Ken Geiser: Our Chemical World

Nov. 10, 2015, 5:24 p.m.
When you see an ad sponsored by the chemical industry espousing the wonders of chemicals, you probably roll your eyes like most of us. But how much does it influence our attitude towards chemicals? As consumers we may do our best to avoid toxins and carcinogens, but they're still everywhere we turn, from our food and clothing to the walls in our houses. This week on Sea Change Radio, we hear from Ken Geiser, whose new book "Chemicals Without Harm" provides a roadmap for sound policing of the chemical industry. By focusing on what we know works, from greener chemicals, to greater transparency, to the templates provided by regulatory bodies beyond our borders, Geiser lays out a better way to live in our chemical world.

Out of the Woods - Show #292 - 11-14-15

Nov. 9, 2015, 2:01 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Mazin Qumsiyeh speaks at Boston College (part 1 of 2)

Nov. 9, 2015, 1:20 p.m.
On October 18, we were privileged at Boston College with a visit by devoted Palestinian justice activist Mazin Qumsiyeh. The visit was facilitated by Eve Spangler, Associate Professor of Sociology, for the benefit of her students. Qumsiyeh is also a professor, geneticist, and author most recently of Popular Resistance in Palestine: A history of Hope and Empowerment (Pluto Press, 2010). For more details, see his extraordinary website, qumsiyeh.org. We have divided Professor Qumsiyeh's presentation into two parts, the first of which we give you today. In it, he discusses oppression, resistance, the failure of Zionism, and the requirement for true diversity in order for a society to be sustainable. On his way from Palestine to Boston College, despite U.S. citizenship, Professor Qumsiyeh was stopped and taken aside for questioning at every checkpoint, including those in USA. He reports this is nothing compared to Israel's daily oppression of all Palestinians.
