Bassem Tamimi speaks about the Palestinian resistance to occupation

Nov. 5, 2015, 12:56 p.m.
Our feature presentation this morning is our interview with Palestinian activist Bassem Tamimi, who recently came to the Boston area to speak about the Palestinian resistance to occupation, particularly as it relates to the systematic resistance of his village of Nabi Saleh. Both he and several members of his family have faced imprisonment, and some have lost their lives in their resistance to the Israeli occupation. Whenever possible we try to feature the Palestinian voice, which seldom is included in the daily coverage of the events in Palestine/Israel. One of those voices is our friend and colleague, journalist, Samer Jaber who writes out of Bethlehem. Before the Tamimi interview, here is the latest piece he sent us on the so-called Israel-Palestine peace process.

Cuba and African Liberation

Nov. 4, 2015, 4:45 p.m.
The Cuban revolutionary government has played a major role in the struggle against apartheid South Africa and in solidarity with Angola over a period of many years. Imitations: On GMOs and Concrete

Nov. 3, 2015, 9:55 p.m.
Now that Stephen Colbert has put his alter ego to bed, some of you may be missing broadcasters pretending to be someone else. Well, apparently, Colbert is not the only imitator out there. University of Florida Horticultural Science professor, Kevin Folta, invented a persona for his podcast, the Science Power Hour with Your Host Vern Blazek. Our guest today is Brooke Borel, a Buzz Feed journalist who recently wrote about how, in interviewing himself, Blazek (or Folta) criticized anti-GMO activists and stirred up some controversy. Borel and host Alex Wise talk about the fake podcast persona, about how the Folta/Blazek position on GMOs has erupted into a firestorm, and how one unassuming podcast has raised much larger issues around the need for transparency when big business and academic science co-mingle. For the second half of our show, we look at a very different sort of imitation. We revisit a discussion with geologist, biomineralization expert, and entrepreneur, Brent Constantz. He tells us about a process which mimics lobster shell generation, transforming carbon dioxide to a calcium carbonate base that can be used as cement or concrete.
