Obamas Geopolitical Strategy for Containing China
Oct. 19, 2015, 8:22 p.m.
The historian Professor McCoy is an expert on U.S. foreign policy, the Philippines, Southeast Asia; global drug trafficking; and CIA covert operations.
He teaches at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his September 2015 piece in Tom Dispatch âGrandmaster of the Great Game: Obama's Geopolitical Strategy for Containing China,â stands in total contrast to the current views of media pundits as well as the Republican party.
They see Obama as weak, clueless, and indecisive in matters of foreign policy. McCoy provocatively places Obama among the limited number of presidents and public figures whose geopolitical skills - if he is allowed to succeed - will have transformed Americaâs global role.
In this interview McCoy takes listeners from Halford Mackinder, father of geopolitics and âheartlandâ theory, to Elihu Root to Brzezinski to Obamaâs efforts to interrupt Chinaâs global ambitions and maintain US global hegemony. He also puts into this geopolitical perspective Obama's recent efforts to reach out to Burma, Iran and Cuba.

Out of the Woods - Show #289 - 10-24-15
Oct. 19, 2015, 3:34 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
Death of the Oslo Accords, then Mohammad Hmidat, head of PARC
Oct. 19, 2015, 1:14 p.m.
First, some recent news and analysis out of Palestine:
Per the New York Times: "Demonstrating a new level of tension with Israel, President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority declared on Wednesday that his people were no longer bound by mutual agreements with Israel, including the Oslo Peace Accords, which created the foundation for the Middle East peace process."
The Oslo accords were a disaster for the Palestinians from the beginning. Israel was never willing to set any boundaries delineating Israeli and Palestinian land, and so from the outset Israel continued to do what its intentions were from the beginning. They continued to take Palestinian land inside the International Green line. There are now about 650,000 Jewish settlers within the West Bank. Palestinian autonomy promised, but never delivered has become a cruel joke. The Palestinian Authority has become a wing of the Israeli security apparatus. Finally, Abbas has blown the whistle, but it is too late for the two state solution that was the goal of the Accords.
In an interview published by the Institute for Middle East Understanding, Ramallah based Attorney Diana Buttu analyzes what may lay ahead for the Palestinians without the structure of the Oslo Accords. When asked about an assessment of the Oslo Accords for the Palestinians, Ms. Buttu responded: "The US-sponsored Oslo Accords have been an unmitigated disaster for Palestinians. Instead of leading to Palestinian freedom, the Oslo process entrenched Palestinian dependence on Israel economically, while giving Israel cover to deepen its occupation and settlement enterprise without suffering international censure for its violations of international law and human rights abuses. ..." Listen for much more.
Today we look at a Palestinian organization that does an amazing job of supporting the production of Palestinian products and marketing them to the world in the face of enormous Israeli restrictions and rigorous conditions that must be adhered to. A year ago I interviewed Mohammad Hmidat, who heads the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC). PARCâs success story, despite overwhelming obstacles created by the occupying power, Israel, bears repeating and therefore we went into our archive to present once again the PARC story.
Finally, we must give a salute to the UN which, despite objections from the US and Israel, this past week raised the Palestinian flag to stand among all the other nations which comprise the UN. A symbolic victory, but a victory nonetheless.

Prison Toilets (10-18-2015)
Oct. 18, 2015, 12:20 p.m.
This week, Sean talks about the changes to the prison toilets at Warren CI in Ohio where he sits in 3A status. Apparently recently they "updated" the toilets to limit the amount of flushes one can have during the course of the day. Sean explains about how this attempt to control people's bowel movements affect cell-mates relationships and the quality of life on the inside in very simple and yet important ways.
The case of Jessica Burlew
Oct. 18, 2015, 12:11 p.m.
This week Bursts spoke with Beth, a member of Phoenix Anarchist Black
Cross and a member of the Support Jessie B committee about the case of
Jessica Burlew. Jessie is a now-18 year old woman on the autism
spectrum and diagnosed with schitzo-effective disorder who's been held
in solitary confinement as a protective measure in a Maricopa County
Jail. She's being charged by the state in the death during a sexual
encounter with her 42 year old man 2 years ago in what even coroners
have deemed to be accidental. We talk about Beth's case, about gender
and courts, about child welfare, mental health and advocacy in the
criminal system of Arizona.

Marius Mason is an anarchist, an environmental and animal rights
prisoner serving nearly 22 years in federal prison for acts of sabotage
carried out in defense of the planet. No one was injured in any of these
actions. After being threatened with a life sentence in 2009, he
pleaded guilty to charges of arson at a Michigan State University lab
researching Genetically Modified Organisms for Monsanto, and admitted to
12 other acts of property damage. The sentencing judge applied a
so-called âterrorism enhancementâ to his term which added almost two
more years than the maximum requested by the prosecution. This is the
harshest punishment of anyone convicted of environmental sabotage to
date.
Marius is incarcerated in the high security Administration Unit at
the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas. According to
the prisonâs own literature, the unit is âdesigned for female inmates
with histories of escapes, chronic behavior problems, repeated incidents
of assaultive or predatory behavior, or other special management
concerns.â Marius has never violated any prison rules. Clearly, he is
being held in this unit because of his political beliefs and in an
effort to silence him.
The unit is frequently and unpredictably locked down for hours on end
due to violence and suicide attempts resulting from the claustrophobic
and oppressive conditions. Prisoners leave the building for medical
treatment, but only after a protracted wait and fierce advocacy on the
part of the prisoner even though Carswell is ostensibly a medical
facility. Access to mental health counseling, medical care, and
educational opportunities are greatly diminished because of security
issues.
Due to shifting policies Marius unit is only accepting mail
addresssed to Marie (Marius) Mason. This change has felt like a big step
back in his plea to begin his transition (Mason is a transgender man).
Additionally he has recieved little to no mail in the past weeks,
leaving him in almost complete isolation from the outside world,
It's asked that people write to him, to let him and the prison
administration know that folks are keeping an eye on his situation.
Address letters to:

We have just received word that Ericâs trial is likely to be continued
yet again. Ericâs public defender has entered a motion to continue his
trial date until March 8th, so that we can have more time to prepare for
trial or otherwise resolve the case. We expect that the judge will
grant the motion.
As you may know, itâs been over a year since Ericâs arrest and
pre-trial incarceration at CCA Leavenworth (a private prison operated by
the Corrections Corporation of America) in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Although for Eric and the rest of us it feels like itâs been a very long
time, for a trial of this caliber, itâs pretty standard to spend a
couple years in prison awaiting trial.
Many warm thank youâs to all those who have been making preparations
to come to Kansas City for the trial. We hope to be able to give plenty
of notice so that people can make clear plans to attend trial and show
their support. We hope that, should Ericâs case go trial, friends and
comrades will fill the courtroom.
We are also happy to report that Ericâs mail situation seems to be
improving! Thanks to all of the efforts of people across the country to
pressure the CCA mailroom to abide by the laws it purport to uphold.
Although we dream of a world without âlawsâ or ârights,â in the meantime
weâll do what we can to keep our friendâs mail out of the trash. Thanks
to all those who were willing to join in the effort!
For now, you can help by writing a letter to Eric, hosting a
letter-writing night for him, donating money to his legal fund or buying
a t-shirt. The road before us is long and expensive and itâs going to
take a lot of support to get through it. Again, many thanks to all of
you who have continued to show your support throughout this arduous
process.

This from https://rally.org/f/5os4KR80OFc,
a fundraising site being used by supporters of Janey Waller, arrested
in an obvious case of racial profiling, in which the cops said he âfit
the descriptionâ of a crime he did not commit. A witness to the âcrimeâ
immediately confirmed that Janye had nothing to do with it, but Janye
was still taken into custody where he was questioned and then leveled
with serious charges related to last yearâs protests in Oakland against
the non-indictments for the murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
JANYE WALLER IS A YOUNG BLACK ACTIVIST, A LOCAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY
AREA. He lives and works in Oakland, providing financial support to his
mother, his two younger brothers, and his cousin. He attended Berkeley
Community College where he planned to major in Accounting, but had to
take leave in order to help support his family, and he hopes to return
to college soon. Janye also volunteers at a social center in West
Oakland that works to empower black and indigenous people living in the
Bay Area through education and mutual aid. Within this space Janye works
tirelessly, helping coordinate and administer programs focusing on
skills like urban farming, which foster both community and individual
autonomy.
JANYE IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO IS CURRENTLY FACING SERIOUS CHARGES AFTER
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE FLOODED THE STREETS DURING THE WAVE OF PROTESTS IN
THE BAY AREA LAST WINTER. After several high profile police killings of
young black men, the Bay Area, like much of the rest of the country,
surged into a wave of protest and resistance. The state responded by
using the legal system as a tool of repression, threatening
incarceration and steep fines for some of those involved in these
actions. It is sad but obvious that the one person getting targeted for
that beautiful moment of protest is a strong and politicized young black
man.
IT IS GOING TO TAKE TIME AND MONEY TO FIGHT THESE CHARGES. The legal
process saps significant resources. Janye needs help with the costs of
legal defense and the substantial bail amount that he borrowed.
Other ways you can help: COME OUT TO SUPPORT HIM IN COURT! This matters!
Next court date: Monday Oct 19th, 9am, Wiley Manuel courthouse Dept
115. Also: HELP JANYE FIND A STABLE JOB! GET IN TOUCH!
Please give whatever you can and let others know.

Brilliant, which is recorded out of Berkley CA and features co hosts
Aragorn! of Little Black Cart (an anarchist publishing house) and Bellamy
formerly of Free Radical Radio. The Brilliant self describes as "an
attempt to tell different kinds of stories, ones with complex moral
plays, ones that arenât so clearly stories, and ones that are of human
size. Their motivation to tell these tales is a desire to see a
proliferation of different stories and not just the simple morality
plays of popular culture or the inverted, but otherwise identical,
stories of the radical milieu." Check out their archives, and stay tuned

This comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is involved in very dubious activities abroad, including invading Yemen and supporting ISIS.

Zafar Bangash brings his wide knowledge on all of these topics, and explains why Saudis get away with everything:
being allies of colonialism in the Middle East bring benefits to the Saudi ruling class.

#398 -- Unshackling Ourselves From War, Part 1
Oct. 17, 2015, 11:58 a.m.
Veteran peace activist Kathy Kelly gives a powerful talk on the human costs of the US's elective wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She tells stories of average people caught on the ground in a war zone ... and of US-government-sonsored lies, crimes, and fraud in our conduct of war and alleged "reconstruction."
And she tells stories of the courage of ordinary people in the war zones--people working to ease the suffering and repair the damage to their and their neighbors' lives.
