Palestinian activist Nidal Al Azraq and his organization counter Israel's discriminatory water policies
Feb. 3, 2016, 6:07 p.m.
This week the entire program is given over to the featured Palestinian voice of activist Nidal Al Azraq. Nidal, born and raised in the Aida Refugee camp in Bethlehem, now lives in the Boston area where he is executive director of the nonprofit organization 1 for 3, which focuses on working to bring clean water to the West Bank of Palestine in the face of incredible shortages due to the discriminatory water policies of Israel. Israel's government completely controls all flow of water in both Israel and Palestine.
We sat down with Nidal in this extended conversation to discuss his people and his work.
We also hope you will join us again for next week's presentation, which will feature an interview with Nery Ramati, a leading human rights attorney in Israel, specializing in freedom of expression and protest. He has been representing Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights and anti-occupation activists in the military and civil courts since 2008.

Bernie Sanders - Dubuque Iowa Rally
Feb. 3, 2016, 11:14 a.m.
Friday night campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa at the Grand River Event Center. Sanders was accompanied by his wife Jane and Dr. Cornell West. He was greeted by an overflow crowd of 1300 people who were fired up to hear his message. Dr. West did the introduction. The program started an hour and one half late due to campaigning delays and travel from an earlier event in Davenport, Iowa but that did not diminish the size of the crowd or their eagerness to hear Senator Sanders vision of what they could achieve working collectively to take back this country from both the oligarchs and
Wall Street Bankers. Sanders identified the Walton family ( Walmart heirs) as the country's most flagrant well fare recipients and enumerated a number his campaigns "radical ideas".

Bush Radio, Cape Town - South Africa's First Community Radio Station
Feb. 2, 2016, 8:24 p.m.
This is a rebroadcast of an interview with Brenda Leonard, one of the founders of Bush Radio. When I met her in May 2009 in San Francisco she was on a US tour of community stations and gave presentations about the iconic, now world famous radio station that came out of the resistance movement against Apartheid.
Denied a license under the old Apartheid regime, Bush Radio went on the air illegally in 1993. Two broadcasters were arrested and the equipment confiscated. After the historic elections of 1994 the first broadcast licenses issued by the Mandela government were specifically for community broadcasters. In August 1995 Bush Radio began licensed broadcasts.
For this broadcast I asked Brenda, who is now manager of Bush Radio, for an update and she wrote: Currently South Africa has over 250 community radio stations reaching over 9.2 million listeners each day." (Which means over 170 stations have been added since 2009.) Bush Radio is still a model for community radio and continues to train much of the staff at the new stations.
They are always looking for innovative ways of engaging their listeners and marginalized groups. Controversial issues are discussed in town halls and the debate is aired live on the air, with audience participation both in the town hall and through sms, Facebook and phone calls.
In this interview Brenda addresses childcare at the station, and children as young a 6 years learning how to broadcast and engineer. She also gives several examples of how the station engages in issues of the day: fighting graffiti bans, or educating students during a 3 months teacher strike.
The Bush radio news department is famous and respected and graduates of the training can easily find jobs at other stations. Since before 2009 the news room has included electronic media such as video and photos, blogs and SMS as well as remote broadcasting. She also talks about international intern programs, and cooperation with journalism departments.

The Sting of Separation -- An Uncomfortable Truth.
Feb. 2, 2016, 12:18 p.m.
The sting of separation and the wearing of an uncomfortable truth is the topic of this edition of Radio Curious. The 2.7 million children of prison inmates in the United States are losing their visitation rights.
Sylvia A. Harvey, an investigative journalist, is our guest. Her story about the diminishing opportunities for children to visit their incarcerated parents was published in The Nation magazine on December 14, 2015.
Some of Harveyâs most cherished childhood memories are the times she was able to visit her father while he was an inmate at Soledad State Prison, in California when she was between the ages of 5 and 16.
When Sylvia Harvey and I visited by phone from her home in New York City, on January 18, 2016, we began with her personal experience and how now absence of not being able visit a parent in prison affects 2.7 million children.
Instead of recommending a book, Sylvia Harvey recommends the song âAinât Got No,â by Nina Simone.
