The Chinese Stock Collapse and Prospects for the Broader Global Economy: Conversations with Radhika Desai and Jack Rasmus

Jan. 15, 2016, 5:24 p.m.
This week's Global Research News Hour takes a close look at the volatility that has gripped the Chinese Stock Markets in the first two weeks of 2016 and attempts to place them in a broader global economic and geopolitical context. In the first half hour, we hear from Radhika Desai, Professor at the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba and Director of the Geopolitical Economy Research Group at that institution. Professor Desai dismisses the Western Press's descriptions of the stock turmoil as a calamity and points to the fundamental strengths of the Chinese economy, as well as the roles of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the One Belt One Road strategies in posing a challenge to the dominance of the Neo-Liberal model. In the second half hour we hear from Jack Rasmus. He is a professor of economics and politics at St. Mary's College in California. He has a new book out - ‘Systemic Fragility in the Global Economy.” Rasmus explains the roots of the turmoil in Chinese Markets, factoring in the liquidity generated by central banks, massive debts, currency devaluations and financial asset versus real asset investments in recent years. Professor Rasmus views the current crises facing emerging markets is merely a new form of the crisis that struck the US and North Atlantic countries in the wake of the Sub-Prime Mortgage meltdown in 2008-2009.

Supreme Court on Challenge to Survival of Public Sector Unions

Jan. 15, 2016, 4:25 p.m.
U.S. Supreme Court Heard Challenge to Bread and Butter Survival of Public Sector Unions with Caroline Fredrickson, President American Constitution Society for Law and Policy and Joe Burns, Labor Lawyer and Author, Strike Back: Using the Militant Tactics of Labor's Past to Reignite Public Sector Unionism Today On Jan.11th, the U.S. Supreme Court considered a conservative legal challenge targeting public sector unions when the justices take up a case brought by non-union teachers who object to having to pay for collective bargaining rights. The dispute pits 10 public school teachers and the Christian Educators Assn International against the California Teachers Assn., a union with 325,000 members and a history of backing liberal political causes. Unions that are certified to represent a group of employees are legally compelled to represent all employees in that unit, which means bargaining on behalf of all the workers for health care and other benefits, higher wages and representing them in grievances to adjudicate their rights against their employers. The dues pay for unions to be able to advocate for services to its members and to administratively function as an organization. This court challenge seeks a decision that would economically starve the public workers organizations affecting their ability to advocate for their members individual economic benefits and their political rights as workers.

"Peace Conference" in Uganda Re Burundi Stalled

Jan. 14, 2016, 1:50 p.m.
Le Beni Tazira explains the reality of the "peace talks" in Kampala, Ugunda (a very questionable place for peace talks). The talks are in shambles. There was no dialog. A trap was set to entangle the Burundi government with a violent opposition party which does not have support nor popularity. The violent opposition party demands that the democratically elected President Pierre Nkurunziza step down, and they demanded an amendment to a Constitutional article mandating a party has to have 5% of the primary vote to be represented in government institutions. This party could not even muster 1% of the vote in the 2010 elections. Tazira emphasizes that Belgium is the main instigator attacking the government of Burundi. They failed to destroy the democratically elected Burundi government, and Belgium's last option is an invasion force. Tazira and Phil Taylor discuss the peace-talk trap, the absurdity of sending 5,500 troops to squash violence in 3 neighborhoods that the local police can control, the violent opposition stashing weapons for years in Burundi, the ex-president Buyoya who came to power via coups causing the genocide of over 300,000 people. Tanzania said they will support troops into Burundi ONLY with the consent of the Burundi government, and they would support only a police mandate.

Bulletin Board: Entertainment and Sports

Jan. 14, 2016, 1:44 p.m.
Entertainment: Phil Taylor praises the newly released film, Trumbo, that details the role of screen writer Dalton Trumbo as a member of the Hollywood 10 taken before the House Un-American Committee in 1947 because of absurd fears that their communist thinking was a threat to the motion picture industry. Taylor says Trumbo lets you see how Hollywood works and how people perform under stress when they have their principles at stake. One example given was Edward G. Robinson, a progressive anti-racist pro-labor man, who clenched when when the hammer came down, when put in the "pressure chamber." John Wayne is portrayed for what he was, a bully and noisy fake, who told Trumbo, a soldier who fought in the war against fascism, to return to Russia. Meanwhile, Wayne's only fighting was on the beaches of California. Wayne was a vindictive arrogant man wanting all of the Hollywood 10s' lives and their families' lives destroyed. Taylor also describes a very touching scene between Trumbo and his daughter who asks him if she is a communist. Trumbo gives the daughter a test, which will warm your heart and your mind. Sports/Football, which some say is a national religion. Taylor discusses the Washington Redskins' redneck discrimination against American Indians and Blacks, their recent loss to the Green Bay Packers and the their abuse of one of the great football quarterbacks, Robert Griffin III. Taylor notes that the Green Bay Packers are the only major sports enterprise in North America owned by their city, an example for all others (but also an example banned by the NFL in 1960).

Voices Of IllumiNation Volume 3

Jan. 13, 2016, 9:05 p.m.
Voices Of IllumiNation is a recorded show for all people, made to honor and promote the wisdom of all of the many wonderful prophetic artists, musicians and poets who have for so long been reaching out to all people on this planet we all share. It is an honor for me to bring their words to the spotlight and place emphasis on the important meaningful messages they share with the world and that coincide with everyone's indigenous common ground. Let us recognize the pearls of wisdom in so many songwriters that people tend to overlook and forget about too quickly and examine their words much closer than ever before, where we will find the many answers to life's questions that we all need to learn from and spread around much more among us all. If we're not willing enough to learn the songs of love, then we're just allowing hate to become the new incoming rhythms of the times. Voices Of Illumination that sing and speak of: 1. What it takes to make the world a better place. 2. When feeling that life is just passing by. 3. The light you're truly loved for. 4. Melting the angers of the past away. 5. The gold mine within all people. 6. The misfits of the mainstream. 7. Keeping our parents crap in the past. 8. Asking God about church.
