Getting it wrong on Syria

Jan. 11, 2016, 5:08 p.m.
What they sell you on Syria is different from what internal U.S. documents say. It isn't Sunni vs. Shia in Syria: most Sunnis fight on the side of the government, against jihadist mercenaries from 100 countries. U.S. documents acknowledge the 'rebels' lack support on the ground in Syria, with Bashar Al-Assad as the leading popular figure. There are no 'moderate' opposition fighters, and the opposition is constructed by the U.S. government. The CIA trained 10,000 fighter-advisors who went into Syria and became enmeshed with the most virulent extremist organizations in the entire world, including Al-Qaeda. The U.S. has also admitted ISIS' usefulness in weakening the Syrian government. Opposition to the ongoing and illegal U.S. intervention in Syria should be a no-brainer for activists in the West, but too many have drunk the 'Syrian rebel' Kool-Aid.

Rebroadcasts from ARadio Berlin and 'Batman Must Die' from Sean Swain

Jan. 10, 2016, 1:01 p.m.
This week on the show, we'll hear several pieces from our comrades at ARadio Berlin. Anarchistiche Radio Berlin is an anarchist radio project which has been active since 2009, and conducts interviews with anarchists and activists all around Europe on a wide variety of topics and in a variety of languages The first segment is one of their latest English-language posts and is an interview with 2 members of the NOTAPA 26, a squatted immigrant center organized in a large part by anarchists. NOTAPA 26 is situated in the Exarchia neighborhood of Athens, Greece, a neighborhood that has had a longstanding anarchist and anti-authoritarian flavor and is frequently a no-go zone for police and reactionaries like skinheads and members of the Golden Dawn party. In the 12 minute segment, the interviewees talk about anarchist squats, solidarity with immigrants and refugees, and the policies of the Syriza government in Greece. More on NOTAPA 26, which can also be spelled in English as NOTARA 26, can be found at http://www.notara26.info/blog/ and they can also be followed on Twitter. The second, half-hour-long segment was an interview conducted by our friends at A-Radio Berlin with 2 members of the newly formed Alustra Anarchist Federation in Finland. The conversation happened at the Anarchist Bookfaire in Tallin, Estonia, this year and ranges over topics from anarchist involvement in the recent General Strike in Finland, the ideas and goals of the federation and the rise of the far right as the government pushes austerity measures. More on the project can be found at http://alustra.co More audio in English from A-Radio Berlin can be found at http://aradio.blogsport.de and search english Next week, stay tuned for an interview with Gary about the fast approaching January 22nd day of solidarity with transgender prisoners. We'll be talking about the realities that trans people face in prison, and the importance of having a day of solidarity which is specific to trans people, among many other topics. January 22nd was recently called for by Marius Mason, a "green scare" prisoner and transgender man incarcerated at FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas. To get a jump start on learning about this day of solidarity, and to start fomenting ideas for actions or events in your area, you can visit the website http://supportmariusmason.org/ and read the first blog post which comes up. Those located in Asheville might consider getting involved with the Tranzmission Prison Project, a books to prisoners program which focuses only on LGBT prisoners. This project is decades strong and sends packages into prisons all over the United States. To get involved, stop by Downtown Books and News at 67 N Lexington Avenue on Sundays from 3-5pm and folks will be there to answer questions and to get you started. Also, on January 30th there will be a benefit concert at the Odditorium to help The Final Straw Radio attend an International Anarchist Radio Gathering this spring in Europe. The concert will feature local metal and punk projects Autarch, Asherah, Lacrymosa and Desperate Measure. The show starts at 9pm and more information can be found on fedbook by searching the title "Resistance in the air: a benefit for local anarchist radio show".

North Korea: Myths and Truths

Jan. 10, 2016, 12:22 p.m.
In the wake of most recent outbreak of Western media lies and distortions surrounding the alleged testing of a hydrogen bomb by North Korea, Back in the USSR makes an effort to set the record straight and delve into the actual history of Korea and, in particular, Korean resistance to imperialism. North Korea's development of atomic weapons can only be understood in the context of resistance to an American Empire, with literally thousands of nuclear warheads, that has for decades threatened to wipe this small country off the face of the earth and left it utterly devastated during the 1950-1953 Korean War. There is nothing "crazy" about defending oneself against an empire that has smashed country after country in the past few decades alone and which has openly announced time and time again that it has you in its crosshairs. Back in the USSR supports the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's legitimate right to self-defense and self-determination.

Welcome to the New Year, sounds like the old one. The economy is in. . . . .a condition, the Chinese tripped their economic circuit breaker causing Europe to loose power, or something similar I guess. Some guys in Oregon became the proud new occupiers of a federal building - and FOX News was sympathetic, just as they were for OWS. Iran and Saudi Arabia seem to be signaling something less than friendly might soon happen and some pollution went into the air in California. . . .wait, this just in - 20% of California emissions went into the air over - how long? Oh well, the world is great and America is greater.

Oregon is Under Attack, or, How a Gang of White Supremacist Seditionists Are Getting Away with Treason Against the Obama Administration

Jan. 9, 2016, 1:25 p.m.
TheAngryindian offers an Indigenist/spoken word analysis of the domestic terrorist 'stand-off' taking place in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (actually it is a sovereign landspace of the Northern Paiute Nation) some distance from Burns, Oregon and makes the obvious comparisons. TheAngryindian asks: What Native American 'militia'/Tribal concern, African, Asian or Spanish-speaking Indio/Latino or Arab political group could trespass as a mob onto federal property; break into and enter a federal building (including commandeering federal vehicles); conduct the first two offences under the threat of military-grade firearms; make open threats to the mainstream news media about this being a 'Kill or be killed' situation if law enforcement authorities 'dare' move against them and survive the attempt? And after the brutal and very public and recent documented examples of systemic violence levied against the 'Occupy' and #BlackLivesMatter Movements by the federal authorities for nonviolent protest, why is it not 'fair' to call this (now) internationally-recognised coup d'état what it is? A clear example of White Privilege and an armed attempt by the US radical far-right to challenge the federal government while Mr. Barack H. Obama is still in the White House? (because in this way, it is easy to blame him for their conscious act of treason) EXTRAS: Archived audio from Bro. Lance Shabazz (NOI) speaking on the inherent political failure of Barack H. Obama (soon after he was first elected) – and - US political science analyst Professor Michael Parenti presenting a late-1990's Marxist critique on leftist reductionism and how this habit empowers the inner-workings of Anglo-centric hegemony and is represented by the domestic and international violence of the 'Deep-State'.
