Salt Water Wilderness: Summer Brennan & Doug Woodring

Sept. 8, 2015, 3:07 p.m.
What does the word wilderness evoke in your mind? A vast field, a dense forest, a body of water? If you’re an attorney, it may simply be a legal term. It turns out that how the law defines wilderness can be pretty significant for conservation efforts, for private enterprise, and for food production. Our first guest today on Sea Change Radio is Summer Brennan, whose recent book, "The Oyster War," tells the story of a legal struggle concerning an oyster farm in Northern California. The case, hinges largely on the definition of wilderness, and made a bit of a splash, if you will, with Fox News and the Koch brothers. We delve into the history of the Drakes Bay Oyster Co. and talk about the hostilities that ensued when the government tried to shut it down. Later, we revisit my discussion with Doug Woodring of the Ocean Recovery Alliance whose Hong Kong-based organization continues the fight to clean up our ocean wilderness.

The Loss of West Antarctic Glaciers - Interview with Prof. Eric Rignot

Sept. 8, 2015, 2:26 p.m.
The world was shocked in May 2014 when NASA announced that parts of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appear to be in an irreversible decline. That area holds 4 feet of sea level rise. This rebroadcast prepares for an update of the melting - one year later. Eric Rignot is one of the lead scientists in this project. I called him on May 23, 2014 to find out how the teams arrived at these data: Interview on Remote Sensing Technology with Professor Eric Rignot. He teaches Earth System Science at UC Irvine and is a glaciologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena A new study by Professor Eric Rignot and researchers at NASA and the University of California, Irvine, presented in May, 2014, finds that a rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears to be in an irreversible state of decline. The Amundsen Sea Embayment with its five glaciers is one of the hardest to reach areas of West Antarctica. The advent of over-flights by airplanes and now observation from satellites was a game changer for research, says Professor Rignot. This is an interview about the current technology of observation, and the way in which results on glacier thickness, movement, temperature, and contact line (grounding line) with warming ocean waters are mapped. Professor Rignot is among the leaders in the new field of remote sensing technologies. He pioneered advances in radar interferometry. This phone interview, held on May 23, 2014, addresses the questions how NASA and the European Space Agency, along with scientists, are collecting data from space, not just from airplanes.

Zafar Bangash from Syria to Lebanon to Yemen

Sept. 8, 2015, 12:17 p.m.
Zafar Bangash responds to Phil Taylor's concern: Syria has taken in tens of thousands of refugees from Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon. Why now does Lebanon not now welcome the Syrian refugees? Bangash shows the majority of Lebanese have welcomed 1.2 million Syrian refugees (more than 1/4 of their total population of 4 million). He explains the complication of the collapsed Lebanon government, which has not had a president since May of 2014, due partly to the French imposed colonial constitution. If this Constitution were removed, Bangash proclaims that Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah would win hands down because Hezbollah's successful and non-discriminating social services -- especially in housing, food distribution and medical care -- are cherished by all. Bangash explains how and why the current garbage crisis in Lebanon is being exploited to create a crisis inside of Lebanon--a crisis that might force Hezbollah to withdraw its military from Syria and also draw them into internal conflict in Lebanon, which Hezbollah has worked hard to avoid for decades.

Sept. 8, 2015, 12:08 p.m.

Mother Agnes Mariam tells Europe to look into their conscience and determine how their interference provoked displacement. The Western powers have created a lawless intervention that denies the sovereignty of Syria. Sister Agnes asks Canadians to consider how they would feel if their powerful neighbor intervened in their country in the same way.

Out of the Woods - Show #283 - 9-12-15

Sept. 7, 2015, 12:45 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
