Nancy Murray shares observations from her recent visit to Palestine
Dec. 23, 2015, 6:32 p.m.
Recently Palestinian activist Nancy Murray returned from Israel, having led a delegation for the Interfaith Peace Builders. Nancy has been a frequent traveler to Palestine for two decades, and therefor is uniquely qualified to help us gain some perspective on the current difficult times in the Middle East.
We sat down with Nancy to get her take on conditions in Palestine following her recent trip, and also to discuss her work locally with the Boston Alliance for Water Justice.
Among those conditions: more and more Israeli checkpoints, more and more time spent waiting at those checkpoints and submitting to ever more invasive searches. In one particular checkpoint stop, the soldiers insisted on gassing the entire interior of the visitors' bus as part of their search, which lasted three hours. And the Palestinians who live there are treated even worse than visitors.
Yet, Nancy observed, despite the extreme hardship of daily victimization, most Palestinians are amazingly resilient and maintain steadfast hope for justice in the future.
Before we begin the interview, some commentary: The times are devastating for Palestinians as we know from the stream of news stories that report how particularly young people in their desperation, living under the suffocation of Israeli military occupation are increasingly deciding to take their stand against this military oppression by lashing out with random stabbings and assaults on Israeli citizens and even the military. Most of these assaults lead to the death of the Palestinian, as the stated Israeli policy is to shoot to kill in such instances. This really is a form of suicide, a choice by young Palestinians who see no future for themselves and finally decide to make a final act of resistance through martyrdom. It is a tragic sign of these desperate times for the youth of Palestine.
The response of the Israeli military is to clamp down even more dramatically by raising the level of collective punishment on the Palestinian people, more checkpoints, more house demolitions, more land confiscation, More restrictions on travel, more violent responses to nonviolent demonstrations.

Grant Smith explores unanswered questions remaining from Jonathan Pollard spy case; the identity of mysterious Mr. X or Mega who provided control numbers of top secret government files to Pollard's handlers that Israel's spy was tasked to produce and copy; why those in the pro-Israel community who assisted him, arranging the first contact with Israel Embassy and another who provided secure apartment where documents could be copied, were not indicted as âaccessories after the fact,;â and the monetary value of secrets sold by Pollard; Smith also speaks about all other Israeli spy cases in which its agents went unpunished, suggesting that Pollard prosecution was diversion from hunt for Mr. X. Other agents discussed were Zalman Shapiro, whose NUMEC corporation in Apollo, PA diverted enriched weapons grade uranium for Israel's nuclear weapons to Israel, leaving the town a toxic superfund site, and Arnon Milchan, the Israeli-born Hollywood producer who worked for Mossad, obtaining nuclear triggers for Israel with Netanyahu on receiving end in Israel, according to FBI document.

In Memory of John Trudell: What it Means to be a Human Being (ONE of TWO)
Dec. 22, 2015, 7:38 p.m.
When John Trudell died on December 8, 2015, many were at a loss how to explain in a few words what he meant to them: Santee Sioux poet, philosopher, musician and warrior came to mind and the commercial media added his roles in films and the films made about him.
TUC: Trudell grew up on and around the Santee Sioux reservation near Omaha, Nebraska. In 1969 he participated in the Indians of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island . From 1973 to 1979, he served as national chairman of A.I.M., the American Indian Movement. The government response to A.I.M. was swift Trudell said, âThey waged war against us. They hunted us down. They killed, jailed, and destroyed us, by any means necessary.â
One of AIMâs greatest accomplishments on Trudellâs watch was drawing attention to the US government policy of Tribal Termination and the eventual rollback of Termination and the Restoration of tribal rights and some Native lands. AIM walked The Longest Walk from California to DC and occupied the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) headquarters building. While there, AIM activists discovered secret plans to terminate even more tribes and went public.
Of course government agencies and the FBI became dedicated to ending the nascent Native American movement. To this day it remains unclear who inside AIM was used by the FBI and what the effects of the FBIâs defamation campaigns against certain members of AIM were. John Trudell personally became a target of the FBI. In their amazing 17,000-page FBI dossier on him, the reported that they feared his verbal skill the most. âArticulateâ appears repeatedly.
In 1979 that war by the FBI took a terrible personal toll on John Trudell. On February 11, he led a march to the FBI headquarters in Washington D.C. Approximately 12 hours later, in the early morning hours, a fire âof suspicious originâ burned down Trudellâs home on the Shoshone Paiute reservation in Nevada, killing his wife Tina, their three children, and Tinaâs mother. Devastated by the loss of his family, Trudell withdrew from the world; âwriting wordsâ became his way âto keep some sanityâ and continue to survive. Trudell returned as musician, poet, and highly sought-after public speaker.
This program you will hear the first half hour of a talk he gave in March 2001 in San Francisco. The hall was filled to capacity. Trudell took the stage with a thin folder of his poems under his arm. He began with a disclaimer of sorts, leading into a free association of thoughts about Earth and Sun, ancient wisdom, and modern intelligence, and what it means to be a human being.

Dec. 22, 2015, 1:47 p.m.
Victor Hugo said of Paris that nothing was more fantastic, more tragic, or more sublime. Will the same ever be said of the COP 21 climate agreement brokered this month in the iconic city? Today on Sea Change Radio, we re-cap the Climate Summit with prominent freelance journalist Vivienne Walt. Walt and host Alex Wise discuss the impact of the Paris Agreement on the worldâs largest polluters, explore how big banks and deep-pocketed interests are reacting to the pact, and examine efforts to accelerate the transition to clean energy in developing nations. Walt also talks about how the world views U.S. climate skepticism and what effect the November terrorist attacks and climate protests had on the summit.
