20 Years Since Pres. Clinton Shredded Welfare

Twenty Years of Deepening Poverty Since Pres. Clinton Shredded Welfare Safety Net
with
Felicia Kornbluh, Prof of History & Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at the Univ of Vermont. Her books include The Battle for Welfare Rights: Politics and Poverty in Modern America and Ensuring Poverty: Welfare Reform After 20 Years (with Gwendolyn Mink) forthcoming.
August 22 marks the beginning of "welfare reform's" 20th year, signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996. Kornbluh says: "Playing to a racist imagination and dealing in sexist double standards, Republicans and Democrats came together 19 years ago to transform income assistance for the poor into a system of regulation, deprivation and punishment. The legislation that established Temporary Assistance for Needy Families ( TANF ), made limiting women's choices and ending single motherhood its goals. The nation's chief policy dedicated to impoverished families with children did not include mitigating poverty, enhancing opportunity, or attenuating inequality as its goals. As a result, while welfare rolls have declined, poverty still stalks single mothers & their children -- and extreme poverty is at crisis high levels. As we approach the 20th year of this disgraceful program, it is time to overhaul TANF principles and practices to support the family work single mothers do and open real pathways to economic security.

The Horrifying Plight of Palestinian Refugees In Syria
Aug. 28, 2015, 2:28 p.m.
Our feature presentation this morning deals with the Palestinians who are, or were, in refugee camps in Syria, most of whom are now displaced once again by the war raging throughout Syria. What is happening to them? We have two presentations by Wasam Sabani and Nidal Vitari, who spoke at the Palestine Center in Washington, DC.
Before that, we read from two articles.
The first article is a follow-on of the grisly firebombing, perpetrated by Jewish extremists, that killed 18-month-old Ali Dawabshe and his father. The article is entitled "Self-defense patrols form in West Bank as PA fails to protect Palestinians following Duma firebombing." It's posted at mondoweiss.net/2015/08/palestinians-following-firebombing.
The second article relates to the ongoing harassment of the Bedouins, this time in East Jerusalem. Already displaced by the Nakba, Bedouins who choose to build new homes for themselves are confronted by refusal of permits to build. If they build anyway, the new home will be demolished before long. By contrast, Israeli settlers build whatever they want with complete impunity.

#714 - Sowing Dragon's Teeth From the Cold War to The JCIT
Aug. 28, 2015, 7:44 a.m.
Unnoticed and unreported at the time, the July 1979 Jerusalem Conference on International Terrorism was a seminal event in the history of the "War On Terror". Organised by Benjamin Netanyahu, speakers included George H. W. Bush, Brian Crozier and some of his friends from Le Cercle, academics and deep state actors met to discuss and spin the yarn of the "global war on terror". We begin with a speech on the USA's sponsorship and conscious radicalization of terrorist groups by Nafeez Ahmed and read the first half of an article by Brian Bogart, entitled Sins of Statecraft: The War on Terror Exposed.
