Forum on Hazards of Cellphones and other Wireless Technology

On June 10, 2015, a distinguished group of five very special speakers got together to help inform Massachusetts legislators and the general public on a subject most people don't want to hear nowadays: the hazards of wireless technology. Yes, it's a drag. The problem is that there really are hazards, and because wireless tech has been sold very effectively to nearly every American, it's important to review the information with great care. Wireless technology currently includes cellphones, smartphones, iphones, cordless phones, tablets, laptops, "smart" utility meters, etc. It goes on to include baby monitors, GPS, garage door openers, toys, and a growing list. Each speaker dealt with a different facet of the problem. Like smokers, users who are not in denial seem to be resigned to getting cancer after a while, and this doesn't bother them, even as they provide cellphones to their children! They might be surprised to learn about the addiction aspect, explained by our first speaker. The fact that cellphones foster addiction, just like computer games and other screen-based gadgets, should be obvious. What is less obvious is that cellphones are being given to very young children, and what this is doing to the development (or non-development) of their human sensitivities, including empathy and morality. The entire event, and the respective speakers, are each preceded by an introduction of some sort. We have provided separate audio files, two for overall introductions and one for each speaker. A couple of the speakers wandered away from our mikes. We are indebted to Jim Rizoli of Framingham, MA for access to his video recording using a different mike. Happy Camp Casey Day: 10 Years After

Today is the 10th anniversary of when we first marched down Prairie Chapel Road in Crawford TX so I could demand a meeting with then US president George Bush to ask him "What Noble Cause" murdered my son and hundred of thousands of others. Of course, George Bush didn't meet with me, so we sat in the ditch on Prairie Chapel Road (where we found shade) and set up what became known as Camp Casey (named after by son by Iraq vets who were with me that day). Since that day 10 years ago, I have worked tirelessly for peace and justice (IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY), but the wars continue because many activists pledge allegiance to, not peace or humanity, but partisan politics. My good friend and fellow podcaster Jon Gold interviews me about Camp Casey, 10 years after. Revolutionary History

In this episode of Back in the USSR we examine the importance of history to revolutionary struggle and why the desire for "a better future" is not enough. Every successful revolutionary movement in history has seen itself in the context of a tradition of resistance spanning multiple generations. One of the reasons why many African-American radical movements, for example, have been so successful is because they are made up of people who know who they are, they know their history, they know who has historically oppressed them, and they know who their enemy is. Of course everyone wants a better future, but such a future can only be built out of a tradition of resistance to exploitation and oppression, a tradition of struggle. Movements that lack this understanding are not sustainable.

Ta-Nehisi Coates, Reads from His Block-Buster Memoir to His Son Between the World and Me Readers of his work in The Atlantic (including his June 2014 feature The Case for Reparations) and elsewhere know Ta-Nehisi Coates for his thoughtful and influential writing on race in America. Written as a series of letters to his teenaged son, his new memoir, Between the World and Me, walks us through the course of his life, from the neighborhoods of Baltimore in his youth, to Howard University "which Coates dubs The Mecca for its revelatory community of black students and teachers "to the broader Meccas of New York and Paris. Coates describes his observations and the evolution of his thinking on race, from Malcolm X to his conclusion that race itself is a fabrication, elemental to the concept of American (white) exceptionalism. Ferguson, Trayvon Martin, and South Carolina are not bumps on the road of progress and harmony, but the results of a systemized, ubiquitous threat to black bodies in the form of slavery, police brutality, and mass incarceration. Coates is direct and, as usual, uncommonly insightful and original.
