Paul Z. Simons on the Dispaches from Rojava; part 1 of 3

Nov. 15, 2015, 2:18 p.m.
In 2012, a power vacuum formed in parts of northern Syria as a result of the civil war. These areas, part of the lands inhabited by Kurdish peoples, soon became a testing ground for an implementation of an anti-state communalism influenced in part by an American former Anarchist turned Communalist named Murray Bookchin. Bookchin's thought helped to shape the ideas of Abdullah Ocalan, ideological leader of the Kurdish Worker's Party, PKK, in neighboring Turkey. The people participating in what's been branded The Rojava Revolution are organizing administration and defense based from the neighborhood councils. Popular militias are attempting to fight external enemies like the Syrian military of Bashar Al-Asaad and ISIL/Daesh as well as the internal structures which hold in most societies such as patriarchy, class division and xenophobia. Anarchists, anti-capitalists of all stripes from around the world, feminists, ecologists… these peoples and more around the world are among those engaging with the 3-year-runnning experiment of Rojava. This week's episode features the first of three segments of conversation with Paul Z Simons,a post-left anarchist and co-editor of Modern Slavery Magazine. Paul, writing under the name El Errante, documented his recent tripto the Rojava region in Northern Syria. This first episode will not be followed up immediately by another episode on the subject, however we are making the second and third episodes content available alongside of this one online. Parts 2 & 3 will make their way into radio versions in the near future. Bursts and Paul talk about Democratic Confederalism, gender, ecology, international intervention, religion, ethnicity, anti-capitalism, competing tendencies, holding tensions, international fighters and much much more To follow the links that our guest mentioned in this interview, just click these websites below! http://kurdishquestion.com/ http://rojavaplan.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tev-Dem To see more of Paul Z. Simon's work, you can visit this website Next week on The Final Straw, you'll hear a conversation with an anarchist in Spain about recent and continued repressions of anarchists in that country. Updates on that situation can be found at https://efectopandora.wordpress.com/category/english/ and for pastepisodes of The Final Straw that've chatted on this subject, search thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org for the phrase "pandora" But first this brief announcement: ==================================== At Grand Valley Institute for Women (GVI), a federal prison in Kitchener, Ontario there has been a recent crackdown against LBTQ2+ prisoners and/or prisoners in relationships amongst themselves. Intimate relationships between prisoners are being attacked by a clique of guards acting without apparent direction or oversight from the Corrections Canada administration. We need your support with a call-in campaign to end these practises. Harassment of prisoners includes throwing them in solitary as punishment for being in a relationship, threatening them with transfers to remote parts of the country, separating partners by placing them in different parts of the prison, and laying spurious institutional charges that can lead to being locked in the maximum security unit. Most troublingly, guards have been using physical intimidation and invasions of personal space to harass prisoners who speak up against these practices. The prisoners have been organizing in response to these attacks, but have faced increasing repression for their efforts. Outside support right now can make a major difference in putting a check on the repression of prisoner relationships and dissent among prisoners. To protest this treatment, it's asked that people call Grand Valley Institute for Women at (519) 894-2011. For more guidance about how to conduct this phone call and for updates on this situation you can visit the website https://gviwatch.wordpress.com/ ==================================================== Playlist for this episode can be found here: http://www.ashevillefm.org/node/14344

Terrorism and the Politics of Remembrance

Nov. 15, 2015, 11:52 a.m.
On November 14th Back in the USSR pays tribute to those who fell in imperialist wars from World War 1 to the present and explores the politics of history and remembrance because what we remember, who we remember, how we remember, for what purpose and for whose interests is an inherently political act. Reactionary and imperialist political forces, past and present, have always tried to use the dead as tools to justify new acts of war, repression, exploitation, and conquest - whether they are dead soldiers, dead victims of terrorist attacks, or anyone else that can no longer speak for themselves and who is seen as politically useful. As the great Marxist historian Walter Benjamin said in the 1930s: "not even the dead will be safe from the enemy if he is victorious". With the rise of xenophobia and fascism in the wake of the recent Paris terror attacks, these are words we must remember because the victims of this attack, just as the victims of 9/11, are not safe from the right-wing forces that seek to use them for political gain. Brendan Campisi also joins us on the show to unpack what terrorism is and how wanton killing and indescriminate destruction for the purposes of instilling fear has always been a tactic of fascist and reactionary forces throughout history.

Climate Change Interview with Harvard Professor James G. Anderson

Nov. 14, 2015, 10:50 p.m.
Professor Anderson is interviewed by an anonymous Harvard Student. The video was posted at The Continuance Clips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y12P76EYQJ8 This short interview of Professor James Anderson explains climate change in terms of structures. Outstanding questions from the unidentified student. Global mean temperature is the worst way to understand what is happening, he explains why. Anderson provides some straight talk, understandable by a general audience. He explains the climate structures that control weather and filter out UV radiation as coupled to a dry stratosphere and the temperature difference between the Equator and the Poles. I is that that drives the overturning structure in the Troposphere to effect the Jet Stream. Wide ranging interview that encompasses science, extreme weather, politics and economics as they relate to the present crisis. The is no political imperative to describing what is happening as global warming he says. Universities have failed in there obligation to fully educate citizens. At about 18:00 "a question of political will and fundamental intelligence". "everything is wrong with burning fossil fuel, everything is correct with converting photons to electricity....Nature set this whole system up ideally.... are we smart enough to figure this out?" He offers solutions if we assemble the political will to act.

Hebron Under Seige - Christian Peacemaker Team Report Back

Nov. 14, 2015, 7:52 p.m.
Violence continues to escalate all across Palestine-Israel in what some are calling the Third Intifada. Yousef Natsheh and Cody O'Rourke, with Christian Peacemaker Teams, discuss the current contours of the conflict and continuing theft, by exclusion of Palestinians from their lands in Hebron, under the guise of academic research. Naming plays a role in legitimizing the theft. Yousef speaks about the "new designations" which are used to wipe away Palestinian presence to lay false claim to their legal rights. Israeli supported and protected illegal settlements exist in Hebron. The religious fundamentalists who are the inhabitants act as the shock troops for Israel's strategic goal of ethnically cleansing Palestine of its indigenous Palestinian population. All violence is rooted in the oppression of the colonizers and the racism that is at the core of the Zionist project. The speakers offer their experience in non-violent resistance to injustice and possibly the road map for a sustainable and just peace.

Mazin Qumsiyeh at BC, part 2: the Palestinian Museum of Natural History and liberation of Palestinians' minds

Nov. 14, 2015, 1:29 p.m.
Our feature presentation is by Palestinian professor Mazin Qumsiyeh, biologist, geneticist, activist and director of the new Museum of Natural History at Bethlehem University. He spoke at Boston College. We featured Prof Qumsiyeh last week giving a presentation based on his book, Sharing the Land of Canaan. This week we feature the second part of his presentation, which focuses on his work developing the Museum of Natural History at Bethlehem University, and the role it plays in the resistance to occupation. This is not just any Museum of Natural History, but, as you will hear, a lifeline to beauty and serenity in the midst of violence and war. He explains the connection between his ongoing Museum project and liberation of Palestinians' minds. As he says, the best weapon of an oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Qumsiyeh showed a power point presentation as he spoke. You won't see the visuals, but you'll get the idea clearly. Much of the following presentation is in the form of questions and answers. The quality of the audio varies, but hopefully you will be able to follow the conversation. He also invites people to come visit and be involved in the Museum. Before that, we begin with a plea for protection from Palestinian women living in occupied East Jerusalem. The plea was written by the Jerusalemite Women’s Coalition and sent to us by our friend and colleague Khitam Edelbi, an expressive therapist who lives in East Jerusalem and is witness to the horrors being inflicted on the Palestinian community by the Israeli military and the Jewish settlers who are illegally expropriating Palestinian land. We read her statement describing the conditions under which Palestinians are living as Israel increases its strangulation of East Jerusalem. It is a plea to the international community for protection, because there is none from the Palestinian Authority or elsewhere. We also read an insightful article on this subject by Jonathan Cook in Mondoweiss.

NYC CUNY Faculty Arrested in Contract Protest

Nov. 13, 2015, 6:11 p.m.
DOZENS OF CUNY FACULTY IN PROTEST HEAD TO JAIL v. SCHOOL with Barbara Bowen, President, Professional Staff Congress/CUNY and protesting workers CUNY Needs A Raise, Stop the War on CUNY, No More Excuses Chancellor Milliken" Several dozen City University of New York faculty members were arrested in the latest of a series of escalating protests as part of a demand for salary increases. CUNY s roughly 25,000 faculty and professional staff members have been without a contract since 2010 and have had no salary increases in that time. Just before the civil disobedience occurred and after an announcement of a strike authorization vote the CUNY Administration finally put an offer on the table, but the Professional Staff Congress, which represents the workers vows to keep the pressure on as the proposal falls far short of what is needed to pay staff decently for the important work they do. Chancellor Milliken's offer represents a failure on CUNY management's part to secure sufficient investment by Gov. Cuomo/New York State in the people who make college education possible for half a million working New Yorkers, for the immigrants and people of color of this city.
