Trudeau and the Canadian Military-Industrial Complex: A Conversation with Richard Sanders
Nov. 13, 2015, 8:55 a.m.
This weekâs Global Research News Hour attempts to address how and why a militarism and military profiteering seems to be entrenched in Canadian foreign policy regardless of which political party is in power. Guest Richard Sanders is a long time anti-war activist and researcher, coordinator of the Ottawa-based Coalition Opposed to the Arms Trade, and Editor of Press For Conversion Magazine.
Sanders joins us for the hour to discuss the prospects of change under the newly elected Liberal government, a controversial arms sale to Saudi Arabia, the drift of the more progressive NDP and Green parties toward embracing militarism, and whatâs behind the failures of the anti-war movement to meaningfully confront war and war-profiteering.

Bolshevik Revolution 98th Anniversary
Nov. 12, 2015, 10:02 p.m.
Back in the USSR commemorates the 98th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 by celebrating the victories and successes of socialist societies in the 20th Century and beyond. The achievements of socialism with regard to economic development, education, healthcare, human services, gender and national equality, technological and scientific achievement and other progressive indicators become all the more impressive when one realizes that all these gains were made in the face of constant aggression and hostile action from the world's capitalist powers. And yet, the USSR, Cuba, China, Korea, Vietnam, Angola, Mozambique, Grenada, and other socialist societies managed to do what had previously be thought unthinkable: they managed to build a society without exploitation.
Halloween and the Monster that is Capitalism
Nov. 12, 2015, 9:40 p.m.
In Back in the USSR's first ever Halloween episode, we focus on some of the truly horrifying aspects of the world in which we live in and conclude that Freddy Krueger, Jason, Cujo, and every other character featured in modern horror films/literature is pretty tame in comparison to the CIA, the American Empire, and the global capitalist system in general. As Karl Marx said in volume one of Capital: "If money comes into the world with a congenital blood-stain on one cheek", then "capital comes dripping from head to toe, from every pore, with blood and dirt".
The Canadian Federal Election
Nov. 12, 2015, 9:21 p.m.
After a long hiatus, Back in the USSR returns at last with some views on the recent Canadian federal election and how none of the major capitalist parties addressed the reality of austerity being faced by millions of Canadians today who must work harder and harder for less and less in order to pay rent and put food on the table. Though it took me away from the radio for awhile, I'm proud to say that my absence was well spent, running in the election for the Communist Party of Canada, the only political party that seemed to be truly addressing the concrete realities and demands of working class people in this country rather than engaging in grandstanding and PR sales pitches.
