Orpheus Reed on the sixth extinction. For many years, scientists have studied the decline of wild species and actual extinctions. Many warn that the current level of extinction is a crisis, that we are approaching, the sixth mass extinction in Earth's history. October, 2013, the International Programme on the State of the Ocean issued a report on the impact of climate change, pollution, decline of coral reefs and fishing. Its results are alarming. Alex Rogers will join us to talk about the this.

Exxon Fuels Denial
July 14, 2015, 6:40 p.m.
Children learn that lying is wrong, often in kindergarten. Apparently, somewhere on the road to becoming corporate leaders, they un-learn that lesson, especially if they are running multinational oil companies. Today on Sea Change Radio we talk with The Guardian's Suzanne Goldenberg who has been leading the charge in explaining the significance of an email which shows Exxon has been aware of the link between its operations and climate change for quite some time. As one of the leading environmental journalists today Goldenberg puts the email and the subsequent climate denial campaign in context. We talk about the history of climate change awareness, the responsibilities of large fossil fuel companies like ExxonMobil, and the devastating environmental consequences of a corporation that plays fast and loose with the truth.

Sandor Katz: Wild Fermentation (ONE of TWO)
July 14, 2015, 1:44 p.m.
Rounding out the programs by Paul Stamets and Jack Gilbert, it is my pleasure to repeat a talk by Sandor Katz and his eloquent redemption of the much maligned bacteria and microorganisms without which life would not be possible.
The original broadcast was in February 2013.
When he left New York City and joined a rural off the electric grid community in Tennessee over two decades ago he knew very little about growing vegetables and even less about fermenting them. His amazing development as teacher and author of two books: Wild Fermentation and The Art of Fermentation, was fueled by fond memories of pickles he relished as a kid in NYC, love for the nourishing power of good foods, and his deep interest in the culture, art and history of fermentation. His great appeal as a teacher and speaker also lies in his direct and honest approach to life. He is openly gay and living with AIDS and is convinced of the healing power of food.

Out of the Woods - Show #275 - 7-18-15
July 14, 2015, 9:22 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Beyond Greece: The Worldwide Face of Austerity
July 13, 2015, 1:16 p.m.
With all of the current discussion around Greece, the crippling economic austerity being forced upon its people by international creditors and banks, the loss of pensions and jobs, the cutting of public services, and the selling off of public assets to wealthy oligarchs, what goes unmentioned is that all of this is part of the normal functioning of the capitalist system which is based on the accumulation and expansion of profit at any cost. As Michael Parenti has pointed out, the motto of the capitalist is "we have a lot, we can get more, we want it all". So when we look across the globe, we see Puerto Rico - an impoverished colony of the American Empire - transformed into a offshore tax haven which is now on the verge of economic collapse. We see vast numbers of migrant workers coming from Mexico to North America to find jobs because the economy of their own country has been restructured to serve the needs of multi-national corporations at the expense of the people, resulting in desperate poverty. We see workers in India who, even with higher incomes than one decade ago, consume less calories per day and face chronic malnutrition because they must pay for essential services that were once free but are now privatized. Capitalism always wants more and it does not care about people. It is the vampire that sucks the blood of humanity.
