Why Boston Must Reject the 2024 Olympics

June 23, 2015, 5:10 p.m.
Officials of the City of Boston (MA) and other elites have pushed, and the International Olympics Committee (IOC) is said to be accepting and planning for, staging the 2024 Olympics in Greater Boston. Such a staging would cost the public huge sums of money and would turn the area upside down in many ways. There are no benefits, other than for the elite. This is not the people's will! On 6-2-2015, No Boston Olympics presented two very special speakers who addressed a large crowd in a Jamaica Plain church on the problems with this threatened nightmare incursion and what to do to stop it. WZBC's Truth and Justice Radio producer Stan Robinson was there to record, and so was longtime MIT Radio with a View producer David Goodman. We exchanged our results; this posting is intended to represent the best of them, along with Stan's introductions, used on Truth and Justice Radio. Kade Crockford of the Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts spoke about the effects of the so-called “security” programs that come with mega-events like the 2024 Olympics. “Security” is actually a code word for policing, surveillance, and reduction or elimination of citizens’ rights. These programs are extraordinarily expensive, disruptive, slanted against minorities, and controlled by unaccountable players. Dave Zirin, author of 8 books and sports editor of The Nation magazine, spoke on Corruption at FIFA, worse at IOC, and why Boston's people must proudly refuse hosting Olympics 2024. He gave three special reasons why NO PLACE should allow hosting of the Olympics: debt, displacement, and militarization. Finally, Diane Wilkerson, a former state legislator in the audience, spoke on behalf of the nonwhite and lower-income community, who have never been consulted or asked for consent. Both speakers used some naughty words. We respect those words. But we replaced them to avoid the most obvious type of FCC troubles.

Abrahm Lustgarten: Water Management Breakdown

June 23, 2015, 4:47 p.m.
Discussions about the West's epic drought tend to focus on the need to cut back on residential and agricultural water usage. The importance of water conservation during this record dry spell notwithstanding, sound water management turns out to be about a lot more than just water use. Today on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise speaks with Abrahm Lustgarten of ProPublica, who is writing a multi-part series exposing unfortunate policies and practices vis-à-vis our most precious, life-sustaining resource. We learn about an enormous power plant on Native American land in Arizona which helped create the modern desert cities of Phoenix and Tucson, explore some of the antiquated water policies for land holders in the American West, and discuss the conundrum of water management and long-term growth facing desert metropolises like Las Vegas. Then, we hear an excerpt of our interview with filmmaker James Redford from a few years ago, as he explains the vast importance of the Colorado River to the West’s water supply.

Paul Stamets: Mushrooms, Bees, and Saving the World (TWO of TWO)

June 23, 2015, 11:58 a.m.
This is the conclusion of a one hour speech recorded in May 2015 in Seattle, not far from Stamets' home near Olympia, WA. Stamets begins with the story of the rarest mushroom in the Pacific Old Growth forest, the Agarikon; and how the Department of Health bio-defense program had to acknowledge the extraordinary healing power of that mushroom. That's followed by a groundbreaking recently concluded analysis of the deaths of honey bees and what can be done about it. Paul Stamets has studied mushrooms for over 40 years. He discovered new species of fungi, saved ancient ones from extinction, and pioneered countless techniques of mushroom cultivation. Along the way he found many ways how fungi can be healers of people and of the the environment. Stamets is the founder of Fungi Perfecti www.fungi.com/, a family-owned company specializing in mushroom cultivation and research. Much of the financial resources generated from Fungi Perfecti sales are used to preserve and protect ancestral strains of mushrooms from the endangered Old Growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Paul Stamets is the author of many books, among them: Mycelium Running, a manual for the mycological rescue of the planet.

Out of the Woods - Show #272 - 6-27-15

June 23, 2015, 7:40 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
