Can campaign against austerity move from Quebec to the rest of Canada?

Quebecers have led the way in fighting back against austerity with large protests across the province. However, in the rest of the country, communities have been slow to mobilize against ongoing austerity measures. Riedsville Resisters: Hunger Striking against the TIER Program at Georgia State Prison (+ music)

June 21, 2015, 1:28 p.m.
This week you'll be hearing an interview with Earthworm (Dell) of Atlanta Black Cross and Sandy, who's the mother of an inmate at Georgia State Prison, about the TIER program being implemented there. The TIER program is the means by which the certain prisons in Georgia are reducing the time outside of cell for prisoners down to mere hours a week from multiple a day based on minor accusations and infractions and sometimes with no clear process towards getting out or limit of stay. While inside, these prisoners are kept on a minimal diet with no commissary, often no access to the library for legal research along with other issues. In response to the conditions under TIER at GSP, numerous prisoners initiated a hunger strike back in April, with one continuing to this day. More on what's going on with TIER at GSP, check out http://atlblackcross.org, to read the words of the prisoners themselves via their letters posted and transcribed there. You can also find addresses for the prisoners at that site. A good intro article can be found here Also mentioned was the Free Alabama Movement, which is a multi-state network of incarcerated folks (Alabama & Mississippi, plus affiliates in CA & VA) organizing non-violent protests to the exploitation of their labor for profit, the racialized system of incarceration in the U.S. and the horrible conditions of their incarceration. More on the project, including links to their prisoner-sourced podcasts can be found at http://freealabamamovement.com/ For our interview with members of the FAMM, check out this link: http://thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org/post/2015/02/09/free-alabama-mississippi-movements-in-prisons-updates-on-sean-swain/ Finally, referenced was the case of Kalief Browder, incarcerated at the New York prison of Rikers Island from the age of 16-19, without trial on the accusation of stealing a backpack. Browder committed suicide 2 years after his release, in June of 2015. Following the interview we'll be hearing songs by the Philly post-punk project King Azaz, the Oakland deathrock band Bitter Fruit and the Czech atmospheric RABM project Marnost from a recent comp which translates to "Come and See". Israel as an apartheid state as seen through the eyes of two Jewish Israelis

June 20, 2015, 2:01 p.m.
Today we take a look at Israel as an apartheid state seen through the eyes of two Jewish Israelis. They each describe some of the elements that make the state classically apartheid. Of course the Israeli government and leadership vigorously deny that Israel is an apartheid state, but have little to say when they are faced with the discriminatory laws, policies and actions that define the state. Rather than argue about whether Israel is an apartheid state or not, we will look at what is happening on the ground, and allow you to make up your own mind on the issue. The first observation comes through an interview with Economist and Journalist Shir Hever originally recorded on the Real News Network as he describes what he experienced on his recent trip back to Israel. [Shir Hever interview] The second look at apartheid is through the eyes of Jeff Halper who heads the Israeli committee Against House Demolitions. Jeff is an anthropologist and former professor at Ben Gurion University. We have featured Jeff Halper several times in the past on This Week In Palestine, and while most of his former addresses were to American audiences, this particular address was recently made to an audience in Bremen, Germany. Here is Jeff Halper discussing the apartheid state of Israel. [Halper recording] Before leaving you, we want to report the following stories put of Palestine this past week: The International Middle East Media Center, the source of much of our news here a This week In Palestine, reports that there has been no humanitarian or economic progress in the Gaza Strip since the national consensus government was formed a year ago. According to the Ma’an news service, the leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh says that the situation in Gaza has not changed at all due to the ongoing Israeli blockade, as well as the lack of reconstruction, crisis in providing money for salaries, and ongoing shortages in water and electricity (Hamas article). And this from the United Nations (UN article). And finally (Blacklist article). And so the Zionist pushback continues…evidence of the effectiveness of the pro-Palestinian movement on campus.

Hot Fuzz

June 20, 2015, 8:46 a.m.
This week we turn The Q over to one of of our preferred customers! Kevin Dillon, the Wizzard of Wexford takes the reigns and pulls out a personal favorite, HOT FUZZ the 2007 film from writer/director Edgar Wright. Goes something like this… Top London cop Nicholas Angel is good! SO good in fact, he’s too good! And unfortunately making the rest of the force look bad! To remedy the situation, he’s reassigned to the quiet and crime free town of Sandford. There he’s paired with new partner Danny Butterman, who endlessly questions him on the action lifestyle, something he’s only seen in movies. Everything seems dull for Angel, until two actors are found decapitated. It’s called an accident, but Angel isn’t going to accept that, especially when more and more people turn up dead. Soon, Angel and Danny clash with everyone, whilst trying to uncover the truth behind the mystery of the apparent “accidents”, and maybe the boring town of Sandford needs him more than anyone originally thought. Upon it’s release in 2007, Hot Fuzz was met with rather good reviews from fans and critics alike – and is generally regarded in equal esteem as Shaun of the Dead – the film that opened the door for this sophomore effort from Write and Pegg.. We know Kevin Dillon likes this, listen to see if we agreed. That, plus our Top 3 “Buddy Cops” in movies.

Taxi Drivers Caravan to Albany to Protect Full-Time Jobs

June 20, 2015, 8:45 a.m.
NYC Taxi Drivers Caravan to Albany to Protect Full-Time Jobs with Bhairavi Desai, Ex. Dir. NY Taxi Workers Alliance A traffic jam of taxicabs circled the Capitol in Albany to put the brakes on legislation sponsored by ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft, which allow people to pick up passengers in their own cars. NYC would be required to accept drop-offs by Uber and Lyft drivers with lower standards than licensed NYC taxi and for-hire-vehicle drivers and there would be no way to enforce regulations against these drivers from cruising through NYC picking up illegal fares. The Taxi Workers Alliance says the legislation would lead to unsafe unregulated cars acting as taxis and would lead to a decrease in collectable tax revenue. Desai says that if the legislation passes "riders will lose all kinds of protection -safety, insurance, accessibility, and a fair price. For drivers, this is the biggest threat to fulltime work in this industry because the companies depend on part-time labor and a saturation of vehicles. Already in NYC, we re seeing incomes drop for drivers from all the segments " yellow, green, livery and black car, including Uber drivers.

The Cost of Carbon Emissions - A Debate

June 19, 2015, 4:58 p.m.
With potentially staggering costs involved, are efforts to make major reductions in carbon emissions even worth it? Would the money be better spent elsewhere? Or, does the amount of money involved become less important when considering the possible consequences of climate change? One of the most concerning aspects of climate change is the potential for catastrophic damages. Catastrophic damages are characterized as low probability-high damage events. Extortion in Honduras is a way of life. Not only does result in a terrible human toll but it's a major drag on the already weak economy. Forty bus drivers have been killed in 2014. Extorting buses and taxis has been so lucrative that the gangs have expanded into the selling clothes in the market and lawyers. Marlon Bishop of the NPR show Latino USA and German Andino contributed to this report.
