PJILASI MI'KMA'KI - EPISODE 2

June 5, 2015, 7:51 a.m.
Episode 2 is here – On Language and Education In this episode we will be exploring language and education. The reasons why the Mi’kmaq language is in a desperate state are not mysterious. The Mi’kmaq language is threatened by the legacy of colonialism, from residential schools to the modern education curriculum. In the last podcast episode of PJILASI MI’KMA’KI, we heard about the ‘Sixties Scoop’, where Aboriginal children were stripped from their families and placed into Non-Native homes. The Sixties Scoop was also an attack on language. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission recently affirmed what tens of thousands of Aboriginal peoples in Canada have known for generations; that cultural genocide has taken place in this country on a massive scale. Attempting to kill the Indigenous languages of Canada is a prime example of “taking the Indian out of the child”. Perry Belgarde, in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report, noted that resuscitating the country’s remaining 58 Indigenous languages must be a priority of reconciliation efforts. “Losing my language is one of my biggest regrets,” says Bert Milbert, an Ojibway ‘Sixties Scoop’ adoptee. “Because we did speak when we were younger. And I think that there’s a percentage of incompleteness within me by not speaking my own language.” Enjoy this new podcast episode.

Technology and Society - Society

June 3, 2015, 10:25 p.m.
3rd panel - Day long conference on Technology and Society organized by undergraduate students at the University of Chicago. In this panel our guest speakers discuss societal changes likely to result from the expansion of technology to human endeavors" (program). A note of caution is occasionally heard but generally the down side of the technology discussed is absent as well as the fact that once in the hands of corporations and governments it is beyond control of the scientists who developed it, most likely, with beneficial intent.

Miners' Singular Purpose To Feed the Insatiable Maw

June 3, 2015, 9:58 p.m.
Mick Lowe explains the title, "The Insatiable Maw": He borrowed it from the late lawyer, politician, man about town, Elmer Sopha, who referred to the miners' singular purpose being to feed the insatiable maw of the copper cliffs smelter. The Insatiable Maw is set in the Cooper Cliff smelter complex. The protagonist, Jake McCool, fights for health and safety in the mines. The third volume of The Nickle Range Trilogy will be longer and will depict the titanic battle between labor and capitol during the 1978-79 strike. Lowe emphasizes we must tell the story of labor struggles so the struggles and the labor heroes are not lost in the past.

Failed States Policy explained by Thomas Mountain

June 3, 2015, 9:54 p.m.
Thomas Mountain takes the listener into the world of the "failed state" created and maintained by US imperialism and its proxies. Mountain emphasizes that the last thing the US wants is an independent nationalist potentially Islamic government in power, so the US chooses a failed state over allowing a state to become independent and nationalistic (what is needed to push the US out). Mountain explains why the US failed state agenda, with the Saudi's acting as a US proxy, has not succeeded in Yemen; and, he compares and contrasts the US success of failed states in Iraq, Somalia and Libya. Mountain also explains the US fight to get the Chinese out of South Sudan and asks the key question: WHO is funding the South Sudan VP, Riek Machar, to create and maintain an army to shut down the Chinese oil wells in South Sudan.

US-Saudi Terrorism Stops Humanitarian Aid Ship to Yemen

June 3, 2015, 9:51 p.m.
Caleb Maupin explains the Saudi military attack against the Iranian Red Crescent (UN recognized) ship trying to bring humanitarian aid to the Yemeni due to the Saudi bombing killing at least 4,100 Yemeni, mostly civilians, and destroying the infrastructure, educational and medical centers, mosques and power plants. The Red Crescent aborted its mission due to continued Saudi bombings. The Saudi intended to kill all on the ship if they reached shore. The people of Yemen have risen up against the Saudi imposed Yemen President Hadi. Maupin emphasizes (1) The Yemeni coalition is a comprehensive fight for democracy and their own Constitution and is against the Saudi interference and terrorism. (2) The Saudi are a proxy for the US who supply the Saudi with weapons and satellite support. (3) Their mission was NOT an Iran supported military operation, but a respected humanitarian operation (4) Saudis do not have a military they can count on: Mercenaries are defecting and joining the resistance in Yemen.
