Measuring Methane

June 2, 2015, 9:21 p.m.
When we think of the potential dangers of fracking for natural gas, what may come to mind is the dramatic image of flaming tap-water. But the prospect of methane released in the hydraulic fracturing process goes beyond contaminated ground water to include poor air quality and accelerated climate change. Researchers have struggled to accurately measure how much methane is released through fracking, and studies vary widely in their findings. This week on Sea Change Radio, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Lisa Song, of Inside Climate News joins us to make some sense of the various studies, and help us understand the impact of fracking on the air we breathe. We also delve into the political divide among environmental groups, as nonprofits like the Environmental Defense Fund break with longstanding allies on the subject.

International Campaigns to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

June 2, 2015, 4:48 p.m.
The overwhelming majority of nations on this earth are strongly opposed to nuclear weapons. They know that if those weapons were to be used they would affect everybody on earth. They do not understand that we have successful negotiations to ban chemical weapons, land mines and cluster bombs but have not banned the most dangerous weapons ever. Even though the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has been in force since 1970 and even though more countries joined than any other disarmament agreement the treaty has failed in many ways. The idea had been that: “the NPT non-nuclear-weapon states agree never to acquire nuclear weapons and the NPT nuclear-weapon states in exchange agree ... to pursue nuclear disarmament aimed at the ultimate elimination of their nuclear arsenals." However under the NPT the number of nuclear weapons states has increased and, instead of dismantling their arsenals completely the most powerful among them are upgrading their weapons and carrier systems. In response a new international grassroots movement has emerged to abolish nuclear weapons and you will hear from the key staff of two vibrant organizations. Ray Acheson is Director of Reaching Critical Will. That's the disarmament program of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the oldest women’s peace organization in the world. Tim Wright is the Campaign Director of ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. ICAN is already active in 95 countries with the goal of forming a treaty banning nuclear weapons since any use of nuclear weapons would cause catastrophic humanitarian and environmental harm. Ray Acheson and Tim Wright spoke at the 2015 symposium on The Dynamics of Possible Nuclear Extinction, convened by the Australian physician and anti nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott. Recorded on March 1, 2015.

Imperialism at Home and Abroad

June 2, 2015, 11:17 a.m.
This week Back in the USSR examines the manifestations of the Israeli system of Apartheid in Palestine and how colonial regimes throughout history have attempted to conceal their inherently brutal nature from their own people as well as from outsiders. The same holds true for the United States where this past month, protestors in Philadelphia marked the 30th anniversary of the destruction of the African-American organization MOVE by police...who were willing to drop a bomb and level an entire city block in a residential neighborhood just to remove a "subversive" organization. In the second half of the program I interview Dr Michael Parenti about his new book "Profit Pathology and Other Indecencies" and get into the nitty gritty of what austerity is and how workers can defeat it.

Out of the Woods - Show #269 - 6-6-15

June 2, 2015, 10:04 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Nakba Commemorative statement focused on Gaza

June 1, 2015, 4:31 p.m.
May 15 is the day each year that the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Israeli, is commemorated in Palestinian society. This year as a feature of that commemoration a call was issued by the Palestinian National committee and some 14 organizations in Gaza. The focus of the commemorative statement this year is Gaza. In the wake of the Israeli assault on Gaza in the summer of 2014, only a handful of those in the international community who had pledged financial support to rebuild Gaza have given any support whatsoever, and countless Gazans continue to try to keep their families together while living in the ruins of their bombed out houses. Perhaps many countries are withholding support because they feel that Israel will again assault Gaza and destroy everything that was rebuilt, as has happened in the past. The reality is that the Israeli economy benefits from the destruction of Gaza. Much of International money sent for reconstruction is spent in Israel to purchase building materials and other supplies for the rehabilitation. For Israel the rebuilding of Gaza is a stimulus for their already burgeoning economy. How sick is that? We present the Nakba Commemorative statement issued by the Palestinian Boycott National Committee and signed by 14 Gazan organizations. Our feature presentation this week is a recorded interview with the late Palestinian scholar, Edward Said, who for many years was a Professor at Columbia University. Prof. Said died from Leukemia in 2003. The interview focuses on his most celebrated work, Orientalism, which was published in 1978. An important scholarly work, Orientalism uncovers the multiple ways Western culture stereotypes, caricatures, and vilifies Arabian culture. Although often attacked by various critics, Orientalism is well documented and has more than withstood the test of time and all the criticism. This excerpted commentary by Edward Said also features analysis by Prof. Sut Jhally of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Professor Said observes that Islam's followers have long been regarded, and treated, as a lower form of life by western elites, a profound injustice with tragic consequences.
