Out of the Woods - Show #262 - 4-18-15
April 19, 2015, 6:53 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
Civil Liberties Effects of Boston hosting the Olympics
April 19, 2015, 2:23 p.m.
On April 5, 2015, Kade Crockford of the American Civil Liberties Union spoke at the Community Church of Boston on the subject of Civil Liberties effects in case Boston decides, as many of its "leaders" want, to host the 2024 Olympics. Truth and Justice Radio was there to record.
Crockford's presentation makes it crystal clear that the effects would be devastating, not only during the games, but starting years before and enduring many years beyond. She cites caged "free speech zones," criminalization of protest, arming and militarization of police, and massive surveillance infrastructure. Two billion dollars of taxpayer money is slated for Olympic "security" in Boston. That's the entire cost of running Boston's public transportation system for a full year.
She does show some slides, which listeners obviously won't see, but we like to think her descriptions will suffice.

Jesse Cohn on anarchist art, lit & resistance culture (1848-2011)
April 19, 2015, 12:20 p.m.
This week, we speak with Jesse Cohn, author of the recent book, Underground Passages: Anarchist Resistance Culture 1848-2011, published by AK Press. In the book, Jesse explores trajectories in literature, cartoons, comics, music, poetry, drama produced at times by and or for or just conspicuously consumed by anarchists in europe, north and south america and asia during that time period. We talk about what Mr Cohn sees us as seeking to communicate, how we do that, and who we're speaking to and how those questions change over time. More info on the book can be found at akpress.org
Jesse also puts out an invitation to listeners to share their stories of growing up in an anarchist household (what some might term "Black Diaper Babies") or as the child of anarchists. The hope is to create a work that'd speak about what multi-generationality looks like or could look like. You can reach him at jcohn(aaat)pnc(d0t)edu with questions or stories.
As a quick update to last week's episode about the hunger strike at OSP Youngstown by 6 prisoners: Hasan announced on April 15th, 2015 that he and 4 other prisoners stopped their hunger strike. Sedrick Tucker was continuing his hunger strike as of Friday, April 17th, 2015 due to private medical malpractice issues which he did not feel were being addressed by the demands that were met by the prison administrators. The support website, lucasvilleamnesty.org, stated in a recent post that the strike was a mixed victory, with some demands won and others not with the Warden conceding as little as possible. Hasan suggests that concerned people should contact that Ohio Medical Board and ask them to look into Sedrick Tucker's treatment at the hands of Dr. James Kline. Hasan also suggests contacting ODRC Medical Service Administrator and ask to send another doctor to review Mr Tucker's situation. It should be noted that Sean Swain also had issues with Dr. Kline during his last hunger strike.
Have a pencil read to write this down if you want to contact ODRC's Medical Admin.

Rhymes For Young Ghouls
April 19, 2015, 10:37 a.m.
Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone!⦠This week we take a look at the much appreciated film RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS from Canadian writer/director Jeff Barnaby. Set in 1976âs Red Crow Miâg Maq reservation, it tells the story of Aila, played by Devery Jacobs â a hard knock girl pulling herself up by the bootstraps as she navigates her adolescence around an overbearing system designed to keep her in place. One particular example is by government decree, where every Indian child under the age of 16 must attend residential school. In the kingdom of the Crow, that means imprisonment at St. Dymphnaâs, where youâre left at the mercy of âPopperâ, the sadistic Indian agent who runs the school. At 15, Aila is the weed princess of Red Crow. Hustling with her uncle Burner, she sells enough dope to pay Popper her âtruancy taxâ, keeping her out of St. Dâs. But when Ailaâs drug money is stolen and her father Joseph returns from prison, the precarious balance of Ailaâs world is destroyed. Her only options are to run or fight⦠and MiâgMaq donât run.
Rhymes for Young Ghouls had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept 9th, 2013. It was awarded Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival. Itâs first theatrical release was in Toronto, Ontario on Jan 31st, 2014⦠Listen as we peel back the layers on this one and round it all out with our âTop 3 Evil Headmasters in Moviesâ
New York Says $15 and a Union on 4/15

New York Says $15 and a Union on 4/15
On April 15th Low-wage workers in NYC and more than 200 cities across the country and more world wide held the biggest-yet day of action in their Fight for $15 campaign . What started with fast food workers in NYC on November 2012 has spread to home care and child care workers, retail, adjunct professors, and more, with ever-growing numbers of participants. and scattered reports of stores closed by the strike, at least temporarily. This organizing comes against a backdrop of stagnating wages, chronic unemployment. and underemployment. As many as half of workers in some low-wage industries are receiving some form of public assistance. Workers tell stories of struggling to pay rent and arrange child care, and even face sleep inequality. And the organizing is having an effect.Walmart and McDonald's and other major chains recently announced wage increases are due to pressure from workers and in an effort to shut down further organizing. But workers participation on the April 15th actions proves that they are continuing to organize in increasing numbners and arenas of struggle..

Should The U.N. Admit Palestine As A Full Member State?
April 17, 2015, 3:02 p.m.
The conflict between Israel and Palestine has a long history. On November 29, 2012, the General Assembly adopted resolution 67/19 entitled âStatus of Palestine in the United Nationsâ with 138 votes in favor, 9 against and 41 abstentions. The resolution accorded to Palestine non-Member observer State status in the United Nations, marking the first time that the General Assembly considered Palestine to be a State.
After 20 years of failed talks with Israel, can the international community be the only path left to a two-state solution, or have the Palestinians set the peace process back by bypassing negotiations?
For admitting Palestine: Mustafa Barghouthi, former Palestinian National Authority Presidential Candidate and Daniel Levy, former Israeli Government Negotiator & Senior Fellow, New America Foundation
Against admitting Palestine: Dore Gold, former Israeli U.N. Ambassador & Advisor to PM Netanyahu and Aaron David Miller, former U.S. Mideast Negotiator, Advised Republican and Democratic Secretaries of State
