"Only One Thing Can Save Us"
April 15, 2015, 12:26 p.m.
Labor lawyer Thomas Geoghegan on the dismal state of the contemporary work place and how it undermines human development and democratic society.
His recent book, "Only One Thing Can Save Us" explores the need for more education on social justice and civic engagement. He offers as an example the School of Social Justice in Chicago's Little Village. He advocates empowering workers through "disruption" tactics, rather than long strikes, and using State Law to require worker presence and participation on corporate governing boards, as is the case in Germany.
Corporate neoliberal management ideology has destroyed the former business model to create fissured work places, not jobs. Previously only unskilled labor was precarious but now
many college graduates, with professional training, find only temporary positions, with little possibility for career advancement or professional and personal growth as was formerly the case.
He expects student debt and abusive management practices to radicalized workers across educational and color lines such as we are seeing in the "fight for fifteen" movement and among adjunct university instructors.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN This week in THE Q we delve deeply into the very affecting Swedish film from 2008⦠It goes something like this. Oskar, a fragile, anxious boy, living in a small Swedish town, is regularly bullied but never strikes back. The lonely boyâs wishes daily for a friend and one day (just like the snow) that wish seems to fall upon him when he meets 12 year old Eli, the girl who moves in next door.. A pale, serious young thing who ONLY comes out at night, seems wise beyond her years, and not at all affected by the freezing temperatures.
Coinciding with Eliâs arrival is a series of inexplicable disappearances and murders. One man is found tied to a tree, another frozen in the lake, a woman bitten on the neck. Blood seems to be the common denominator â and for an introverted boy like Oskar, whoâs FASCINATED by gruesome stories, it doesnât take long before he figures out that Eli may just be the things that horror stories are made from. But soon their fascination with each other leads to a subtle romance, one that gives Oskar the strength to fight back against his aggressors. As they grow closer though, Oskar becomes increasingly aware of the tragic, inhuman dimension of Eli, and of what her existence may lead to â still, Oskar cannot bring himself to forsake her, and with all the burgeoning feelings and confused emotions of a young adolescent, he KNOWS that Eli can only continue to live if she continually moves on, but when Oskar is suddenly faced with his darkest hour, Eli returns to defend him the only way she canâ¦
After itâs (2008) release, Let the Right one In received widespread critical praise. In 2010, Empire magazines ranked it #15 on itâs âTop 100 Films Of World Cinemaâ and has recently been placed # 28 On TIME OUTâS poll of the most important horror films of all time â as voted on by actors, writers and directors who have worked in the Horror Genre.
All of this plus our âTop 3 Undead Movie Charactersâ⦠I donât think that sucks at all.

The Dynamics of Possible Nuclear Extinction - Artificial Intelligence, ONE
April 14, 2015, 9:40 p.m.
The anti nuclear campaigner and physician Dr. Helen Caldicott organized a two day symposium in February 2015 with an international panel of leading experts in disarmament, political science, existential risk, anthropology, medicine, nuclear weapons and artificial intelligence. They addressed the risk of accidental nuclear war, recently proven facts about a global nuclear winter that can be caused by the unleashing of just a few nuclear weapons, the expanding militarization of space, the power and pathology of the US military industrial complex, privatization of the US nuclear weapons labs, nuclear war crimes in the Marshall Islands, as well as two of the vibrant movements to abolish nuclear weapons, a divestment effort under the title Don't Bank On The Bomb as well as ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
In this part ONE of a mini series the risk of artificial intelligence is addressed with audio clips from MIT physicist Max Tegmark and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. The bulk of the program references writing by Stephen Hawking, Berkeley computer science professor Stuart Russell, and Tegmark and Frank Wilczek, both physics professors at M.I.T. They see Artificial Intelligence and its use in military and technological projects as a grave danger to human survival.

This week on Sea Change Radio we hear from noted environmental journalist, Andrew Revkin, about a recent Yale/Utah State survey and mapping project designed to capture American attitudes about climate change and related policy. With thirty years covering science and environmental issues for the New York Times under his belt, Revkin has a distinct perspective, one he uses to analyze the language and the findings of the study. He and host Alex Wise talk about whether the poll results signal a hopeful sign, how the environmental debate does and does not fall along the red/blue divide, and how political rhetoric shifts depending on the audience.
April 14, 2015, 7:37 p.m.
We spend the whole hour talking with Edward Baptist about his latest book, The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism. It gives you a glimpse of the world in a way that you never imagined before, or didn't understand thoroughly before. The expansion of slavery after American independence drove the evolution and modernization of the US, making the South a continental cotton empire, and the US a global capitalist economic power.

Oil Spills, Bomb Trains, New Threat to Our Drinking Water
April 12, 2015, 8:59 p.m.
Following the Deep Water Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the EPA opened several sub parts of the Clean Water Act to address the out dated and unscientific use of hazardous chemicals to deal with the spill. Dr. Ott encourages participants to file comments on the new rule making
and walks them through 10 key points to be addressed to protect communities and fresh water now that so much oil is being moved by train and pipe line. Community input into
the plan is key to assuring that the affected communities will not be victimized twice by removing decision making from the polluter to the EPA; remediation agents must be non-toxic or not used when drinking water is at risk.
