The Nightfly #2015.07 Hour 2 - Mardi Gras Parade - Carnival Spectacular - February 16-22

Feb. 12, 2015, 10:53 a.m.
It's Carnival Time! This week on The Nightfly, we give you a seat in the reviewing stand as the Mardi Gras parade rolls by. We'll bring you big noise from the Rebirth, New Birth, and Soul Rebels brass bands...and many more! We'll watch the Mardi Gras Indians parade as we hear funky sounds from late, great Big Chief Bo Dollis & The Wild Magnolias, White Eagles, and of course, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux. Get out your beads, cut yourself a slice of king cake, and join the parade! Each hour can stand alone or can be aired together. If your station is airing The Nightfly as a weekly series, this episode would be for the week of 2/15. Since it's a Mardi Gras show, it can air anytime between 1/6/15 and 2/17/15. If you air The Nightfly on 2/18/15 or after, I suggest picking up an old show (perhaps #2014.05 ), since once Ash Wednesday comes, the Carnival season is over, and we have to pack up our beads until next year!

The Legal Assault On Palestinian Rights Activism (part 2 of 2)

Feb. 11, 2015, 6:16 p.m.
Feature presentation this week: a continuation of our discussion on the legal assault against Palestinian rights activism we began last week, by sharing the last two segments of the Institute of Palestine Studies conference held in Washington, DC, which feature civil rights attorney Yaman Salahi, and Professor Steven Salaita. As Palestinian voices grow in the United States, so have the attempts to silence these same voices. To counteract these assaults, we need to understand how Zionists work to keep the Palestinian narratives from the American public. First, some news out of Palestine. Usually we look for unique stories out of the West Bank and Gaza, but this week as our host reviewed the news from various Palestinian sources he was struck once again with the sameness of the news reports week after week. They are story after story of the brutality by Israel as it carries out its occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. We are almost numb from reading the same reports of military incursions, tear gassing demonstrations, arresting children, shooting dissenters, demolishing homes, and making life miserable for Palestinians who are resisting their occupation and exploitation. [Some of those news stories are presented.] Final part: a Mondoweiss article by our one-time associate on this program, Samer Jaber.

Out of the Woods - Show #253 - 2-13-15

Feb. 11, 2015, 6:51 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Troubled Coastlines From Louisiana To Maine, Pt. II

Feb. 10, 2015, 6:12 p.m.
Last week on Sea Change Radio, we spoke with Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Bob Marshall about Louisiana’s shrinking coastline. And this week we continue to talk about coastlines. First, in the second part of our discussion with Bob Marshall, we focus on the massive undertaking of reversing a century and a half of policies that have left the Mississippi River Delta region battered.Marshall will tell us about the struggle to raise funds and political will in a part of the country where oil and gas are king. Then, from the deep South we go “Down East” to talk with former Maine State Representative Seth Berry about his state’s coastal problems — ocean acidifcation and rising sea temperatures are putting much of Maine’s fishing economy at risk. Like Louisiana, Maine has a Republican Governor, who has been throwing up obstacles for environmental groups who are trying to address the issue. Berry discusses what it will take to win the battle against the governor Politico dubbed, "America’s Craziest."

3 Minutes to Midnight on the Doomsday Clock

Feb. 10, 2015, 4:45 p.m.
The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by atomic scientists who had participated in the Manhattan Project. They were in shock by the impact of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1945 they founded the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in order to alert people to the dangers of nuclear weapons and the need to abolish them. Over the 70 years since then the Bulletin has published without interruption and has welcomed other scientists who are working on nuclear power and climate change to join them and more precisely describe the existential risk humanity is facing. The decision to move the hand of the doomsday clock closer to midnight was made by over 20 scientists, 17 of whom are Nobel Laureates. They declared: "Unchecked climate change, global nuclear weapons modernizations, and outsized nuclear weapons arsenals pose extraordinary and undeniable threats to the continued existence of humanity" This program is the recording of the press conference held by the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists on January 22, 2015. Speakers were: Kennette Benedict, the outgoing executive director and publisher of the Bulletin Richard Somerville, Research Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography Sivan Kartha, senior scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute and Sharon Squassoni. She directs the Proliferation Prevention Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. http://thebulletin.org/

The Legal Assault On Palestinian Rights Activism (part 1 of 2)

Feb. 10, 2015, 4:07 p.m.
On today's show we share with you the first three segments (out of five) of a recent conference: "The Legal Assault Against Palestinian Rights Activism" sponsored by the Institute of Palestine Studies, and held on November 21, 20014 in Washington D.C. Among other issues, the panelists discuss the criminalization of Palestinian advocacy and the targeting of individual Palestinian rights activists for surveillance, investigation, harassment, and even criminal prosecution, citing numerous cases. The panel was moderated by Journal of Palestine Studies editor Rashid I. Khalidi and featured civil rights attorneys Andrew Dalack, Dima Khalidi and Yaman Salahi and Professor Steven Salaita, whose firing by the University of Illinois has drawn increased attention to the aggressive silencing of pro-Palestinian voices in the US. The panelists discussed the criminalization of Palestinian advocacy and the targeting of individual Palestinian rights activists for surveillance, investigation, and criminal prosecution, referencing the cases against longtime Chicago activist Rasmea Odeh, the so-called Holy Land Five (Ghassan Elashi, Shukri Abu-Baker, Mufid Abdulqader, Abdulrahman Odeh, and Mohammad El-Mezain), and former University of South Florida Professor Sami al-Arian. The panelists also discussed the campus politics surrounding student activism whereby pro-Israel groups apply pressure to university administrations to silence or hinder pro-Palestinian activism through accusations of anti-Semitism and even threatening legal action for alleged ties to terrorism. Even though such efforts are ultimately unsuccessful, they may have a chilling effect on students. Panelists also discussed ways to counter such efforts and support pro-Palestinian activism on university campuses. The first segment features opening remarks by Michelle Esposito and Columbia University prof. Rashid Khaladi. This next segment features civil rights attorney Andrew Daleck discussing the prosecution of Palestinian rights activist Rasmea Odeh. The final segment features attorney Dimi Khaladi speaking about her work in defense of Palestinian activists who are under assault across the country for that activism.
