How smart is it to allow so-called "Smart" Meters on our homes?

Utility companies all over the USA are busily installing a recent high-tech product cleverly named "Smart" meters on customers' homes. The asserted purpose is to improve load management, including motivating customers to use electricity (sometimes also water and natural gas) more efficiently. The real purposes include eliminating meter readers' jobs, spying on customers, and expanding the rate base, fir which regulators allow more profits to be added to customers' bills.
Patricia Burke is national director of Citizens for Safe Technology. She has a lot to say about these "Smart" meters, primarily focused on their health effects on customers and others close to them.

Abrupt climate change is sudden climate change that is detectable over a human lifetime. Naomi Klein explains that we can embrace radical change ourselves or radical changes will be visited upon our physical world. The status quo is no longer an option.
Naomi exposes the ideological desperation of the climate-change deniers, the messianic delusions of the would-be geoengineers, and the tragic defeatism of many mainstream green initiatives. Also she shows why the market cannot fix the climate crisis but will instead make things worse, with ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods.
Naomi Klein is a Canadian author, journalist, syndicated columnist and social activist known for her political analyses and criticism of corporate globalization. Naomi is interviewed by Francesca Rheannon.

Greenpeace co-founder Rod Marining shares his story with David Michael Swanson
Rod Marining is one of the many co-founders of Greenpeace. In this interview, Rod talks about his early activist years before Greenpeace, establishing the now world-renowned organization, fighting nuclear testing and arctic oil drilling and the dangers he faced as a radical activist.
Greenpeace is a non-governmental environmental organization with offices in over forty countries and is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Greenpeace focuses its campaigning on world wide issues such as climate change, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic engineering, and anti-nuclear issues. Greenpeace uses direct action, lobbying, and research to achieve its goals.

Israeli refusenik speaks about Israel's pervasive militarization

Sahar Vardi spoke in November 2014 at the Tree of Life Conference in Cambridge, MA. She describes her own observations, along with her personal experience as a refusenik, of Israel's pervasive militarism. Also discussed: defects in the vaunted proposed 12-month deadline resolution at the UN, and in the recent call for EU recognition of Palestine.
Vardi coordinates the Israel program for the American Friends Service Committee, focusing on countering the militarization of Israeli society. She has been promoting coexistence since working as a small child with her Israeli father planting trees in Palestinian villages. Conscripted into the Israeli Defense Forces at age 18, she was imprisoned for her refusal to serve. Prior to her work with the AFSC, Sahar worked with the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, and the Sheikh Jarrah Solidarity moment, protesting Israelâs eviction of Palestinians from their homes.
The big news out of Palestine in recent weeks is the rumored move by the UN Security Council to vote on a resolution setting a 12 month deadline to achieve a Palestinian-Israeli peace settlement which calls on Israel to withdraw from the occupied West Bank and Gaza by the end of 2017. The draft was formally put forward by Jordan at the behest of of Mahmoud Abbas, the so-called leaders of the Palestinian authority. Sound good? Well, hold on. The more trusted voices of the Palestinian people are sounding serious notes of caution which we want to explore today.
We begin with Ali AbuNimah of the Electronic Intifada:
"...This resolution tries to do exactly the same thing [that the Zionists always wanted], except in a more legally binding and therefore dangerous manner. It makes the claim that 'a just, lasting and peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved by peaceful means, based on an enduring commitment to mutual recognition, freedom from violence, incitement and terror, and the two-state solution.'
"It insists that the entire question of Palestine be reduced to the question of the 1967 occupation and that merely ending this occupation would effectively end all Palestinian claims.
"The resolution uses vague, deceptive and in some places outright dishonest language that would enshrine in international law the âliberalâ Zionist two-state solution and deal a devastating blow to Palestinian rights, particularly the right of return for refugees.
The places it speaks about ârightsâ relate to the Palestinian âright to self-determinationâ â a vague formula which has come to mean in effect a bantustan state and no more. ..."

The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. New Year's Evil with the Lymph Node Institute

Kick back with the questionably good doktors of the Lymph Node Institute as Doc Ellis and Dr Bugbladder manage to eat up an hour focusing on the bleakest night of all: New Year's Eve. Rather than obsessing on your past failures and even bleaker future, try not to think of the onrushing agony of another horrible year loading itself into the calendar like a bullet into a firing chamber. Instead, take this little yellow audio pill and cling like hell to whatever delusions you have left. The doktors will divert you for a solid hour. But fair warning: a considerable chunk of that hour will mean soaking in more versions of "Auld Lang Syne" than I ever knew existed.
And hey...I sincerely wish you all good luck in your efforts to clamber over this ugly yearly hump without giving into the seductive lure of taking that eternal vacation you need so badly.

Assad elected to serve Syria, not America's New World Order

Stephen Gowans, political analyst, and Phil Taylor discuss Gowans' article, "Why Assad Refuses to Step Down," which is based on a Paris Match interview with Assad.
In response to Paris Match, President Assad defended his right to rule democratically, to serve the Syrian People and to insist on accurate terminology: Syria has a State, not a regime.
The US State Department targets any leader (such as Milosevic, Gadhafi, Chavez/Maduro, Fidel/Raul Castro, Assad) who refuses to liberalize the economy of the country, refuses to allow foreign takeover of their natural resources, refuses to become a Western puppet.
Gowans states explicitly in his article and in the interview: "The lesson is plain: Create a good foreign investment climate, become a market for the US arms industry, turn over your resources to the West, cooperate with US military, and you can kill as many of your own people as you like, resist democracy as long as you want, and merrily trample on human rights. Just don't insist that your economy work to the benefit of your own people."
The "American Sniper," Movie Version vs. Reality

Phil Taylor gives a critical review of the warmongering new film, American Sniper, a Clint Eastwood film staring Bradley Cooper as the "legendary" sniper hero, killer Chris Kyle.
Taylor shows (1) The film reflects political and military decadence and (2) It's all about business --Kyle's and his business partners owned a security firm which was built on Kyle's reputation for using his high-power rifle to kill the "enemy," who were often women and children.
Kyle fed the media with lies to enhance his "legendary" reputation for killing humans and bringing in the money for his business. Kyle claimed:
(1) to have shot dead 30 threatening people in New Orleans after Katrina (no bodies with guns found)
(2) to have killed two men who wanted his car at a gas station (no one, including the sheriffs of two counties, had any record of this, no bodies found) and
(3) to have decked Jesse Ventura for badmouthing the Navy Seals (Ventura said it never happened, sued and won $1.8 million).
Ironically, Kyle was killed in February of 2013 by a veteran with P.T.S.D whom Kyle was trying to help through a program he developed: Taking traumatized veterans to a rifle range and hunting. Because he was the famous âsniper,â no one thought to ask if this made any sense.
