When it comes to global oil markets, the one thing that everyone agrees on is that it's complex. The recent plunge in oil prices has many of us searching for explanations: Why has the price of oil dropped from over $100 a barrel to $55 a barrel in less than a year? What are the geopolitical and economic implications of this drop? And what impact will these suddenly low prices have on other energy industries, both carbon-based and renewable? This week on Sea Change Radio, the first half of our two-part discussion with renowned energy market analyst Daniel Dicker. Author, former oil trader and frequent TV commentator, Dicker tries to help us make sense of these slippery oil market fluctuations.

This program is also produced with gratitude in memory of Prof. Theo Colborn, author of Our Stolen Future. Her research into the risks associated with the chemicals used in fracking played a huge part in that victory. She died, age 87, three days before the ban was announced.
On Wednesday, December 17, 2014, a victory made the news: The state of New York banned fracking for natural gas. After activists demanded that the health effects of fracking be studied, a two year investigation by the state's own commission confirmed what the movement had been saying all along, that fracking cannot be done safely. The acting Commissioner of Health for New York State even said he would not let his family live in an area that is being fracked.
New York became the first state with proven oil and gas reserves to announce that it will ban fracking. It was a day for the history books and one that would never have happened if it werenât for basically everyone.
People from Colorado, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Texas, Ohio, Arkansas and other fracking-plagued states sounded the alarm and educated New Yorkers about the coming threat. Scientists uncovered the evidence of frackingâs dangers. Lawyers discovered that New York towns had the right to ban fracking and defended that right in court.
This program contains material of a 2010 TUC Radio broadcast in collaboration with hydropower radio WJFF in the Catskills and programmer Fred Pecora. He gave me his interviews of the founding members of Damascus Citizens.org, that I combined with a presentation by Theo Colborn.
VOP's Hana Kawas interviews Brian Avery

On today's show we share with you some heartbreaking news about Israel's behavior on this year's International Human Rights Day, followed by an interview of American activist Brian Avery, which was conducted by Voice of Palestine host Hana Kawas on September 15, 2014.
Brian Avery is an International Solidarity Movement (ISM) activist who was shot in the face by Israeli troops back in 2003, while working with Palestinian communities to resist occupation and settler colonialism. In this interview, Brian talks about his experiences with ISM, and the current situation in Palestine 21 years after the Oslo Accords. As a grassroots group dedicated to non-violent action, ISM continues to work for justice in Palestine despite brutal conditions on the ground.
Ironically, the state of Israel once again recently proved that it is wholeheartedly committed to brutally killing Palestinians with impunity, whether their resistance is non violent or violent in nature. To "honor" International Human Rights Day on December 10, Israel "celebrated" by killing Palestinian official and activist Ziad Abu Ein, who was also non-violently protesting land confiscation in the West Bank. After being beaten and tear-gassed, Abu Ein was murdered by Israeli Occupation Forces.
To quote the Addameer press release on Abu Ein's murder, "The cold-blooded murder of Ziad Abu Ein on International Human Rights Day is representative of the occupationâs continuous and rampant destruction of Palestinian life and land since the establishment of Israel in 1948, which ironically coincides with the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. On this International Human Rights Day, the international community must realize that it is complicit with Israeliâs continued suppression, murder and displacement of the Palestinian people until Israel is held accountable for its crime.â
