While Mali may have fallen out of the mainstream media news stream over the past two years, talks between the Tuareg rebels and the US-backed Malian government have been ongoing. The most recent round of talks in Algiers ended without a peace deal, stemming manly from the failure of the Malian government to comply with demands from the Tuareg groups for more autonomy in Azawad.
With these developments, along with the recent announcement of more IMF loan guarantees to the Malian government, this week's Global Research News Hour takes a closer look at the dynamics shaping the West African country with three guests.
Abayomi Azikiwe is Editor of Pan-African NewsWire. He has written extensively on the topic of Western, particularly US, involvement in the African continent, and the principally foreign interests being served by the US troop presence there. Azikiwe looks at Mali in a geo-strategic context.

Israel Declared a Theocracy by its Government; Josh Ruebner speaks

We begin with a discussion of the remarkable new Israeli law recently proposed (and subsequently enacted) declaring Israel a nation of Jewish people only, in other words, a theocracy. This contradicts its original declaration that it's a democracy, and of course casts a frightening shadow on all 20% of Israeli citizens who are not Jewish.
Our main presentation today is a speech by Josh Ruebner, which we recorded and edited. Ruebner is national advocacy director for the U.S. Campaign to End Israeli Occupation, a national coalition of more than 400 organizations. Reubner is a citizen of both the United States, where he was born, and Israel, from where his father hails. He spoke recently in a church in Bedford, Massachusetts. He recently released an updated edition of his book "Shattered Hopes: Obamaâs Failure to Broker Israeli-Palestinian Peace," and that is his subject now. The book charts Obamaâs journey from optimism to frustration in the first hard-hitting investigation into why the president failed to make any progress on this critical issue, and how his unwillingness to challenge the Israel lobby has shattered hopes for peace.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. A Child's Country Christmas in the 1950s through the eyes of a 9 Year Old

Larry Krotz reads from his latest book, A Child's Country Christmas. He selects the magical annual Christmas concert presented at his one-room school in SW Ontario in the late 1950s, when he was 9 years old.
After the reading, Krotz laments that now the one-room school house is property for someone in the city to use on weekends and holidays. What was a "fully packaged culture" for a 9 year old in the late 1950s has been lost. The farmers struggle working on the farm and in the city. Building community has turned into searching for bargains at the nearest Wal-Mart. The only push-back is the holistic and organic farm movement.
