Nov 24, the Grand Jury refused to indict the cop who killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Larry Everest has been in Ferguson covering the resistance. 'Tis The Season For A Good Guide

Itâs that time of year, again: the season of givingâ¦or at least the season of buying. When youâre perusing the shelves, be they virtual or actual, what matters to you? Beyond price, quality and value what about knowing how the company that made this product treats its workers, the extent to which production depletes natural resources, and what impact this product has on the environment? Many of us care about these things in the abstract, but it would be awfully arduous to research all of that while we are out there trying to get our shopping done. If only there were an app. But there is!
Our guest this week is Dara OâRourke, UC Berkeley professor and co-creator of Good Guide, a website and smart phone app that consumers can use to make informed decisions on what theyâre buying. Just scan the barcode and get a productâs score on topics ranging from social justice to greenhouse gas emissions. We talk about what has to happen next to help boost consumer awareness, like increasing transparency on the use of nanoparticles, fragrances, and genetically modified organisms and how tricky it is to calculate a comprehensive product score for social responsibility.

I'm almost afraid to post this horrific thing...
This show cut a deadly swath through my studio electronics, taking out two tapedecks, fucking up my monitor resolution, and making the show computer run hinky--and it also gave the unflappable computer at WREK a conniption when I uploaded it. Hell, as far as I know, it could have an even deadlier agenda brewing--it may take all 12 of my listeners out like a fucking David Cronenberg effect. The sad thing is that this show, BSTF #236, at first blush seemed to be no more than a kicky, silly, and bright examination of the polyester decade as filtered through its corporate-fueled memes. But as I was retooling it and polishing it all up for playing some 15 years later, I began to feel as if unreeling the audiocassette was tantamount to weaving an evil spell. The song at issue was a recording of the annoying "Afternoon Delight" done by fellow COOL & STRANGE MUSIC Magazine contributor Wilhelm Murg--he had played a 45 of it at 33 rpm, and the result sounded like the singers were on 'Ludes. I thought about monkeying with it to make it sound even queasier, but I stayed my editing hand in favor of preserving Murg's original mix. But an evil fate had other plans: The first tapedeck developed a crackly hum that wouldn't go away, then the Yamaha Natural Sound deck ground to a slow halt, then totally went tits up. It made for an incredibly queasy mix...but at what price? And will it affect you?
In light of this, I would be remiss if I failed to warn all of you not to listen to it tonight. PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS EVIL SHOW INTO YOUR HOMES. Keep this show away from children, housepets, glass, fresh milk, automotive vehicles, earth-moving equipment, heart-lung machines, computer systems, and sexual appliances. And as always, the staff and management of "BOB"'s SLACKTIME FUNHOUSE is not responsible for any breakage, wear and tear, floods, fires, electrocutions, nosebleeds, brain hemorrhages, and/or spontaneous abortions as a result of listening to this show.

Mass protests also fanned out across the nation in the aftershock of the grand jury decision to not indict patrolman Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown who was 18 years old and unarmed in Ferguson, MO. Protesters are making the connection to the long standing epidemic of police killings of unarmed people of color throughout the U.S. , the most recent of which also include the 12 year old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Eric Garner in Staten Island and Akai Gurley in Brooklyn.
There were also demonstrations, marches and sit-in strikes at 1,600 Walmart stores across the country, calling on the company to pay workers a minimum of $15/hour, provide full-time work with health care and union rights. The countrys largest employer and the Waltons "Walmarts majority owners "are abusing their power and hurting American families by allowing
Walmart to violate workers rights. While the majority of Walmart workers are paid less than $25,000 a year, Walmart brings in more the $16 billion in annual profits; and the Walton family has built up nearly $150 billion in wealth.

The Native American musician, poet and former national chairman of A.I.M., John Trudell, continues his moving, thought provoking spoken word and poetry address. He is opening this part with a surprising new analysis of the practice of voting for the lesser of two evils and continues with thoughts about democracy, technology, and dominance, and the curious construct of god in a human form.
Trudell describes Columbus as one who did not know what a human being is, and tries to activate ancient memories of those who arrived with and after Columbus and their long submerged links to their own tribal ancestry that was erased by the inquisition. Respect and responsibility are the leading values Trudell refers to and he asks what the repercussions of the fears and doubts and insecurities are that we experience in today's culture. He ends by recommending to use our intelligence the way the creator gave it to use: To keep the balance.Â

About the speaker:
Noam Chomsky, linguist, philosopher and political activist, is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT. He was elected to the Fellowship of the British Academy in 1974.
Professor Chomskyâs visit to the UK is being generously supported by the S T Lee fund as part of our Global Perspectives series.

The Canadian government has indicated it is looking for legal opinions on bombing Syria. International Human Rights Lawyer David Jacobs says that they can look no further: the UN Charter clearly states that war is permissible only in self defence, or under the authority of the UN Security Council.
There is no Security Council resolution allowing Canada to bomb in Syria, and no need for self-defense. Bombing inside Syria is an act of war, just as would be the bombing of a Canadian province by a foreign power.

Tuesday December 2nd in Cincinati, Ohio, Keith Lamar faces his final appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals. Keith is a defendant in the Lucasville Uprising case, facing the death penalty for allegedly leading a death squad of prisoners who killed snitches in April of 1993, of which he claims innocence. The Lucasville Uprising, for anyone unaware, was a prison revolt resulting from the administration's refusal to work around the religious needs of Sunni Muslim prisoners at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility who were facing a tuberculosis test including alcohol.
