High Anxiety

This week we check ourselves into HIGH ANXIETY! Mel Brooks’ spoof of over 10 Alfred Hitchcock classics, including Psycho, Vertigo, and The Birds. It tells the tale of Dr. Richard H. Thorndyke, a renowned Harvard psychiatrist with a concealed fear of heights, (or High Anxiety) who takes over as the newest director of the Psycho Neurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous – where the previous head has died under VERY odd circumstances. As Thorndyke heads to a psychiatry conference, he finds himself to be in the company of some very strange colleagues and is soon faced with saving the Institute, his reputation, and his own sanity! The film features a plethora of longtime Brooks collaborators – including Cloris Leachman as Charlotte Diesel, a nurse with a dark sneer and tendency towards domination. Harvey Korman as Dr. Charles Montague, a psychiatrist with a closeted habit of his own, Madeline Kahn as Victoria Brisbane, the eccentric daughter of a patient at the institute, and Thorndyke’s love interest. Although the film was not well-received by critics, it picked up a 1978 Golden Globe nomination for best picture (musical or comedy) and landed Brooks a nomination for best actor. The movie has a number of cameos, from a young Barry Levinson’s spot as an unstable bellboy to a small part by Hitchcock’s right-hand special effects man, Albert J. Whitlock, who plays Kahn’s father…

Let's not dismiss "conspiracy theories," says Parenti. He shows that conspiracies are in fact common--one tool among the many that elites use to advance their class interests. This week he discusses more conspiracies that in fact happened. These include the business elite's reversal the US drift towards social democracy (from the 1970s). The State Department's covert scuttling of a peace treaty in Nicaragua (1980s). And the almost-unknown assassination of President Zachary Taylor (1850).

Canadian Foreign Policy and Why It Matters to Workers

Phil and Stephen Gowans discuss Gowans' recent lectures, "Canadian Foreign Policy and Why It Matters to Workers" at Unifor-McMaster University Labour Studies Program. Gowans explicitly shows it is the economic elites of the corporations and banks who determine foreign policy and create wars or "friends" on the basis of how countries accommodate the moneyed interests. Gowans clarifies with examples: (1) Libya was bombed because Gadhafi wanted assurances for its workers when making business deals, while Bahrain is honored because they have no trade-deal restrictions to protect their "subjects." (2) WSJ Index of Economic Freedom places countries that practice economic redistribution, or attach conditions to foreign investment, at the very bottom of the list. Gowans points to the complicity of Western media serving as a venue for military analysts --presenting them as neutral, instead of clarifying their conflicting interests. Most sit on the boards of large arms manufacturers or lead government policy think tanks.

The Myth of the Akazu Genocide Conspiracy and Its Consequences

Collins dispels some of the myths about Habyarimana and his government that were fabricated by the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and the Western powers to demonize and bring down the Habyarima government, and to make way for the US supported RPF. A major myth is the "Akaza" (little house), which deceptively paints a picture of Habyarimana's wife, family, and inner circle as "extremist Hutu" upset with concessions Habyarimana made during the Arusha Accords and planning a "genocide" against the Tutsi. Another myth: Habyarimana denied the Tutsi refugees from the 1970s war to return to Rwanda. Collins shows how international justice morphed into international politics when the prosecution at the ICTR refused to honor the evidence showing the RPF shot down the plane carrying both President Habyarimana and Burundi President Ntaryamira.
