Helen Caldicott (ONE of TWO) The Ukraine Crisis, Is Nuclear Conflict Likely?

On October 8, 2014, the life long antinuclear campaigner and author Helen Caldicott addressed the National Press Club Newsmakers in Washington, DC. She said that the United States and Russia are dangerously close to stumbling into a war over Ukraine that could go nuclear and kill millions of people in a single day. Over the last eight months, since Russia annexed Crimea in response to the Western-orchestrated coup in Kiev, there have been almost 40 incidents involving Western and Russian air and naval forces. That's according to a report issued by the London-based, European Leadership Network on November 10, 2014. The report said that “to perpetuate a volatile standoff between a nuclear armed state and a nuclear armed alliance is risky at best." (and) "could prove catastrophic at worst." The group's findings added weight to comments made by Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union. Speaking before the Brandenburg Gate on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Gorbachev said: “Bloodshed in Europe and the Middle East against the backdrop of a breakdown in dialogue between the major powers is of enormous concern...The world is on the brink of a new Cold War...Some are even saying that it’s already begun.”

At today's Merchant Venturers' Charter Day Service in Bristol Cathedral the Bishop of Bristol The Right Reverend Michael Hill made the extraordinary statement to hundreds of schoolchildren in his sermon that rumours Bristol born seventeenth and eighteenth century merchant and MP Edward Colston made money from the slave trade are just 'speculation'. It is not known how much the former slave trading Society of Merchant Venturers pay for the exclusive hire of Bristol Cathedral every year for their November Charter Day service which brings together pupils of Colston Boys' School, Colston Girls' School and the new Merchants' Academy in Withywood, but the sum is believed to be considerable. Witness

This week we take on Peter Weir’s Barn Raising Hide & Seek thriller WITNESS (1985), Staring Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis and Lucas Haas. The story is that of Samuel (Haas), a young Amish boy who stumbles upon and witnesses a savage murder in the restroom of a Philadelphia bus station while traveling with his widowed mother. Harrison Ford stars as John Book, the police detective assigned to investigate the murder as well as look after both Samual and Rachel (McGillis) as they confront a world that is not their own. But, when Book discovers that the crime was part of a conspiracy involving several officials in his department, he flees Philadelphia to the Amish country where Samuel and his Mother live with his Grandfather Eli. There, Book goes into hiding, slowly assimilating himself into the Amish community and eventually falling in love with Rachel. But soon his whereabouts are discovered, and those determined to bury the truth (along with those who know it) descend upon Eli’s farm to take Book down – Forcing him to protect not ONLY himself, but the only real witness to the crime that exists. Witness was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Actor Oscars, which still remains Harrison Fords only acting Nod. On Our Own Authority! is an Atlanta-based autonomous research press that has put out over a dozen titles since its founding only two short years ago. "The Commune: Paris, 1872" is a short collection of articles and essays in which various anarchist writers react to and reflect on this momentous event: a 71-day rebellion which, before it was crushed, saw the Parisian working class carry out some fairly inspirational experiments in radical democracy and worker self-management, all without anyone telling them how!
