Chomsky on Real Capitalism & Democracy vs What We Have Today

Professor Chomsky spoke on this subject at the SEIU District 1199 Union Hall in Dorchester, MA, on 9-30-2014. Truth and Justice Radio was there to record.
Chomsky reminds us that despite the jingoistic nonsense we all hear, the US economic system is primarily a state-capitalist system, in which public funds are used to research and develop pioneering technology (the computer, the internet, radar, the jet plane etc.) largely in the form of "defense" spending, and once developed and mature these technologies are turned over to the corporate sector where civilian uses are developed for private control and profit. This is NOT real capitalism. He also reminds us that capitalism (in either form) and democracy (in any form) are mutually contradictory.
Chomsky provides a vast set of facts, in case of any doubt. He points out that most if not all of the obscene private fortunes are accumulated as a result of government protectionism and harsh suppression of labor rights. The prime example is the Carnegie fortune in the late 1800s, garnered from U.S. Steel. Steel was better and cheaper from foreign sources, but our government enacted tariffs closing that market. Meanwhile, one of the first major strikes against U.S. Steel (at Homewood, PA) was put down with the help of the National Guard.
In today's context, the highest reported profits are in the infamous financial sector, including banks and vulture funds. However, the numbers show that those profits are virtually all from government subsidies and forgiveness of obligations. Meanwhile, governments are deciding they "can't afford" to pay their workers' pensions, for which the workers actually paid in advance.
Chomsky also has a few choice comments about certain vaunted slogans and concepts that capitalism apologists claim came from Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations." Chomsky actually read that book, and found otherwise!

Both factories made plutonium. To ensure obedient workers, each government built a wonderful town, restricted freedom, controlled the press, kept out minorities, spied --and gave workers an amazingly high standard of living.

#695 - Lifting The Veil of On-The-Books Funding

Two speakers help us examine the off-the-books funding which has routinely funded CIA operations since its inception. We begin with a recording by Emile De Antonio from the classic show of US dissident thought Alternative Views, centered on George H W Bush, but which reviews the history of state assisted drug trafficking and encompasses a bunch of other key deep state operatives. Next it is journalist Craig Unger on his response to Sep 11th, and we conclude with Peter Dale Scott on the early history of the CIA and its related TLAs. He opines that the seized Nazi assets formed the base of a black budget which has always been available for funding off-the-books deep state operations.

Phil Taylor presents a thought-provoking analysis of the truth and reality of the recent mislabeled "terror events" in Canada, and the Harper government's deluded and dangerous response calling for a suppression of civil rights and liberties, including an extension of the Canadian security certificates allowing arrests and jailing citizens without any evidence.
Taylor shows the irony of the US Anti-Terrorism coalition monopoly, which ignores and excludes the terrorism suffered by countries not in their coalition, esp. Syria, while partnering with Saudi Arabia, a poster child for real terrorism at home and abroad.
Taylor addresses the problem of the two shooters mental health problems being ignored as social services are cut. The shooters violent acts were criminal acts. They were not terrorist acts and should not be used to create a state of fear, nor to bury civil rights and liberties, nor to launch a terrorist crusade.
The Beautiful West and the Beloved of God

Ken Stone of the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War discusses the new book by Michael Springate, "The Beautiful West and the Beloved of God." The book takes place in 2008 in the wake of Bush's "war against terror," and brings together three varied characters --family of Arab Muslim immigrant, well to do Jewish couple, female atheist protagonist.
The themes of the book are Islamophobia and Canadian security certificate, where non-citizens are arrested and jailed without any disclosure/evidence.

The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s.
