This week we spoke with Dawn Marie Paley. Dawn came onto the show last year to discuss her essay, <a href="http://thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org/post/2013/04/03/233/">Drug War Capitalism</a>. Dawn is now about the publish a book by that same title with AK Press.
On September 26, teaching students from the leftist Normalista College in Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, Mexico, protested in the city of Iguala against public policies and in remembrance of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre in the run-up to the Olympics. In response to the protest, their buses were fired upon by about a dozen police vehicles later that day. Following that, 57 of the normalista students were detained, with 14 later returned. That leaves 43 unnaccounted for, rabble-rousing students in southern Mexico who've been disappeared. Soon the story that Narco's had taken the students from the police emerged but was withdrawn. The police chief and the Mayor are on the run. The search for the students brought news of 11 recent mass graves discovered in Iguala which an Argentine group is investigating, despite interference by the government. Protests have spread across Mexico, from the burning of the State Congress building in Guerrero to the blocking of freeways in Michoacan to demonstrations in Mexico City and abroad.
Dawn tells us about the overlaps between Narcos and the Mexican State in such state crimes as this and the involvement of U.S. policy/training/weapons & money in the formation of the Mérida Initiative (Plan Mexico) and creation of Drug War Capitalism seen in so many countries in Latin America. Also, this new moment that appears to be flowering in Mexico where people, despite the fear of the impunity of their attackers and the spinning of their webs, are talking and acting against government as a solution and seeking answers in their own hands.

ALL IS LOST (2013) Writer/Director J.C. Chandorâs tale of one manâs journey in defiance of doom is where we set sail this week. Nearly free of all dialogue and completely drawn around a character with no name (Redford), All is Lost puts us deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, where our man wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his marinerâs intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face. All is Lost received high praise at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to receive several technical awards and nominations, including an Oscar nod for sound. Peterman said : The Global Climate "march brought together a diverse mix of constituencies from anti-capitalists to Indigenous Peoples to representatives from communities impacted by climate change both in the U.S. and around the world. Each had their own set of demands, but the overarching theme was the need to build power from the grassroots and stop relying on governments and the UN to do this for us. Hundreds to possibly a few thousand of these folks will be taking part in the Flood Wall Street direct action to bring attention to the real culprits of climate change, and to expose the corporate capture of the UN."
Petermann recently wrote the piece: "Confronting Climate Catastrophe: Direct Action is the Antidote for Despair: Or, Why the UN is Worse than Useless and we need to Flood Wall Street!"

The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. 'On the Wrong Side,' An Israeli Soldier's Story

Former Israeli soldier Erani Fallatti was sent to Gaza to oppress and kill Palestinians. Fellow soldiers killed a baby who seemed to be in their way. Fallatti wanted to approach the parents and tell them how sorry he was. For this he was jeered, laughed at, and ordered to cooperate in the coverup of the crime. He explains his ultimate realization that he was "on the wrong side," and his attempts to deal with this awful fact.
