She reminds us that there is power in refusing to cooperate. Henwood speaks about that power inherent in society similarly. While "things" are bad Eddie Yuen sees no advantage in framing the moment, as some do, as hopeless.

It s full on Shakespeare as we take on the (2011) Ralph Fiennes directed adaptation of his lesser known anti hero CORIOLANUS A solid cast that includes Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave brings us the tale of Caius Martius Coriolanus (played by Fiennes), a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuses to support him, Coriolanus s anger prompts a riot that culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius to take his revenge on the city. Professor Charles Derber: The Unavoidable Connection Between War and Climate Change

Boston College Sociology Professor Charles Derber spoke recently at a Boston event focused on getting people to New York City for the September 21 rally. His purpose was to explain the unavoidable connection between wars and climate change. Derber is author of "Greed to Green: Solving Climate Change and Remaking the Economy," and several other very special books. He is introduced (in a separate MP3 file posted here) by local organizer Paul Shannon.
We are at a crossroads, faced with a climate crisis that threatens to end our world as we know it. We canât afford the greenhouse gas emissions arising from the way we live and from war and preparation for war.
The sponsors of this event went to New York with the following demands:
(1) Re-direct military spending to the creation of millions of green jobs and to research for a rapid transition from fossil fuels to non-polluting energy sources.
(2) Stop building new fossil fuel infrastructure, including the Keystone pipeline project. Rapidly end fracking projects and the awarding of any new offshore drilling contracts
(3) Move quickly toward mutual abolition of all nuclear weapons as required by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
(4) Stop blocking the proposals for effective international action on climate change being put forward by the Group of 77 and other developing countries.
We canât effectively address climate change without ending war and militarism and the massive carbon pollution which they directly and indirectly generate. And we canât end war without ending the fossil fuel energy system which war protects. The specter of nuclear war hangs over a world in which there are 10 current wars, 32 limited conflicts, 9 nuclear-armed nations and 17,000 existing nuclear weapons. Climate change will cause massive displacement of impoverished and desperate people leading to regional hostilities and increasing the danger of nuclear war and world wide annihilation.

The Case of Omar Khadr: A Conversation with Dennis Edney

Omar Khadr is a Canadian born of Egyptian and Palestinian parents. As a child, he had moved to Jalalabad, Afghanistan with his family. He was 15 when the 9/11 attacks happened. Ten months later, he was captured following a battle with US forces in the village of Ayub Kheyl, Afghanistan.
Khadr, injured during the melee was accused of throwing a hand grenade and planting bombs targetting US Troops. In October Khadr was transferred to Guantanamo Bay, suspected of being an enemy combattant. He would reside at that facility for a decade before being released based on a plea bargain.
Khadr's lawyer is Dennis Edney. Edney has taken on the Khadr case pro-bono and has been involved since 2003 representing his client at the Supreme Court of Canada and at the United States Supreme Court. Dennis Edney is recipient of the 2008 National Pro Bono Award and of the 2009 Human Rights Medal awarded by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia for work that âhas helped to promote and further human rightsâ.
The Global Research News Hour contacted Edney during his visit to Winnipeg, Canada on the occasion of the Grand opening of that city's brand new Human Rights Museum.
