Bishop Michael Hill: Edward Colston's involvement in slave trade just 'speculation'

At today's Merchant Venturers' Charter Day Service in Bristol Cathedral the Bishop of Bristol The Right Reverend Michael Hill made the extraordinary statement to hundreds of schoolchildren in his sermon that rumours Bristol born seventeenth and eighteenth century merchant and MP Edward Colston made money from the slave trade are just 'speculation'. It is not known how much the former slave trading Society of Merchant Venturers pay for the exclusive hire of Bristol Cathedral every year for their November Charter Day service which brings together pupils of Colston Boys' School, Colston Girls' School and the new Merchants' Academy in Withywood, but the sum is believed to be considerable. Witness

This week we take on Peter Weir’s Barn Raising Hide & Seek thriller WITNESS (1985), Staring Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis and Lucas Haas. The story is that of Samuel (Haas), a young Amish boy who stumbles upon and witnesses a savage murder in the restroom of a Philadelphia bus station while traveling with his widowed mother. Harrison Ford stars as John Book, the police detective assigned to investigate the murder as well as look after both Samual and Rachel (McGillis) as they confront a world that is not their own. But, when Book discovers that the crime was part of a conspiracy involving several officials in his department, he flees Philadelphia to the Amish country where Samuel and his Mother live with his Grandfather Eli. There, Book goes into hiding, slowly assimilating himself into the Amish community and eventually falling in love with Rachel. But soon his whereabouts are discovered, and those determined to bury the truth (along with those who know it) descend upon Eli’s farm to take Book down – Forcing him to protect not ONLY himself, but the only real witness to the crime that exists. Witness was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Actor Oscars, which still remains Harrison Fords only acting Nod. It also features a robust cast that includes Danny Glover, Josef Sommer, Patti LuPone, Jan Rubes, and the late Alexander Godunov… All of this plus our Top 3 “Stranger in Strange Land” Movies.

The Paris Commune: historical anarchist perspectives presented by Andrew Zonneveld

On this week’s show, Disembodied Voice speaks with Andrew Zonneveld, managing editor at On Our Own Authority! Publishing, and editor of a recent collection of essays entitled "The Commune: Paris, 1872". On Our Own Authority! is an Atlanta-based autonomous research press that has put out over a dozen titles since its founding only two short years ago. "The Commune: Paris, 1872" is a short collection of articles and essays in which various anarchist writers react to and reflect on this momentous event: a 71-day rebellion which, before it was crushed, saw the Parisian working class carry out some fairly inspirational experiments in radical democracy and worker self-management, all without anyone telling them how! The articles within the collection span a period beginning just after the Commune has fallen, through to the 1960s, providing a fascinating range of historical moments from which to view this important episode in radical action. The presumed topic of the interview was the rich revolutionary history and legacy of the Paris Commune, but the ensuing conversation takes many an interesting and unexpected turn, with Zonneveld sharing his research and thoughts on an array of topics, from Voltairine de Cleyre’s involvement in the Mexican Revolution, to slave rebellions in Guyana, to the intersections between the anarchist and feminist movements in early 20th century Japan. Chomsky on Real Capitalism & Democracy vs What We Have Today

Professor Chomsky spoke on this subject at the SEIU District 1199 Union Hall in Dorchester, MA, on 9-30-2014. Truth and Justice Radio was there to record. Chomsky reminds us that despite the jingoistic nonsense we all hear, the US economic system is primarily a state-capitalist system, in which public funds are used to research and develop pioneering technology (the computer, the internet, radar, the jet plane etc.) largely in the form of "defense" spending, and once developed and mature these technologies are turned over to the corporate sector where civilian uses are developed for private control and profit. This is NOT real capitalism. He also reminds us that capitalism (in either form) and democracy (in any form) are mutually contradictory. Chomsky provides a vast set of facts, in case of any doubt. He points out that most if not all of the obscene private fortunes are accumulated as a result of government protectionism and harsh suppression of labor rights. The prime example is the Carnegie fortune in the late 1800s, garnered from U.S. Steel. Steel was better and cheaper from foreign sources, but our government enacted tariffs closing that market. Meanwhile, one of the first major strikes against U.S. Steel (at Homewood, PA) was put down with the help of the National Guard. In today's context, the highest reported profits are in the infamous financial sector, including banks and vulture funds. However, the numbers show that those profits are virtually all from government subsidies and forgiveness of obligations. Meanwhile, governments are deciding they "can't afford" to pay their workers' pensions, for which the workers actually paid in advance. Chomsky also has a few choice comments about certain vaunted slogans and concepts that capitalism apologists claim came from Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations." Chomsky actually read that book, and found otherwise!

Two speakers help us examine the off-the-books funding which has routinely funded CIA operations since its inception. We begin with a recording by Emile De Antonio from the classic show of US dissident thought Alternative Views, centered on George H W Bush, but which reviews the history of state assisted drug trafficking and encompasses a bunch of other key deep state operatives. Next it is journalist Craig Unger on his response to Sep 11th, and we conclude with Peter Dale Scott on the early history of the CIA and its related TLAs. He opines that the seized Nazi assets formed the base of a black budget which has always been available for funding off-the-books deep state operations.

Harper's Mask of Terror

Phil Conlon promotes the popular Toronto Book fair, and the progressive reality books that will be available. Phil Taylor presents a thought-provoking analysis of the truth and reality of the recent mislabeled "terror events" in Canada, and the Harper government's deluded and dangerous response calling for a suppression of civil rights and liberties, including an extension of the Canadian security certificates allowing arrests and jailing citizens without any evidence. Taylor shows the irony of the US Anti-Terrorism coalition monopoly, which ignores and excludes the terrorism suffered by countries not in their coalition, esp. Syria, while partnering with Saudi Arabia, a poster child for real terrorism at home and abroad. Taylor addresses the problem of the two shooters mental health problems being ignored as social services are cut. The shooters violent acts were criminal acts. They were not terrorist acts and should not be used to create a state of fear, nor to bury civil rights and liberties, nor to launch a terrorist crusade.

The themes of the book are Islamophobia and Canadian security certificate, where non-citizens are arrested and jailed without any disclosure/evidence.
