f any of you have ever noticed the menacing dog face in my blog, well that is the same precious little face in this blog post...my dog tiggy. she has been an important part of m life for the past 12 years and this morning she passed away in my arms. so tonight's show is going to start out with a bit of a heavy heart as i play some of tiggy's favorite songs.
nonetheless, i will try to lighten the mood with some songs from bands playing thursday night in chesapeake (aural exile, griim phantasm, asylum xiii, and the cemetery boys) and something from kasabian who is playing sunday in d.c.
plus, i will be playing new music from freaky mind and massaith.

A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Sharing Economy

Nobody hitchhikes anymore. Back in the 1980s getting a ride with a stranger became decidedly un-trendy. Rugged individualism was in and ridesharing was out. But now, with the advent of social media and mobile platforms, ridesharing is making a come-back. This weekâs guests on Sea Change Radio are Paul Minett, the founder of the Ridesharing Institute in Auckland, NZ and Mark Svenvold, a journalist and Professor at Seton Hall University who recently profiled Minettâs work on ridesharing for Orion Magazine.
Dubbed by some as the Johnny Appleseed of the new ridesharing, Minett points out that if everybody carpooled one day a week we could see as much as a 20 percent reduction in traffic volumes. The corresponding reduction in traffic jams and carbon emissions would also be pretty great. Catch a ride with us now, across the planet, to hear what it will take to put ridesharing back in vogue.
Professor David Keith - A Case for Climate Engineering (TWO of TWO)

This is the second half of an hour with Harvard Climate Scientist David Keith, author of the book A Case for Climate Engineering. He says global warming and CO2 pollution have become so severe that dramatic measures have to be applied by 2020. He is suggesting spraying particles from airplanes into the stratosphere to create a haze that will cool the planets by reducing solar radiation.
He denies that spraying from airplanes has already begun and warns that this form of Solar Radiation Management, SRM, has the power to suddenly change the earth's climate. The impacts - he says - will be different from country to country and North to South and can lead to war when some countries engineer the climate in their favor and send droughts or floods elsewhere.
In this program David Keith answers questions from MIT faculty and students, among them:
Could Exxon or the Koch Brothers just do this form of SRM?
Can it be done surreptitiously? The answer to that is YES.
And a young man working on solar power said he felt scared that the emerging technologies creating energy from the sun would be condemned to fail.

The Road to Unist'ot'en

The Unist'ot'en Pipeline Blockade is near Houston, British Columbia. It's about 1,200 kilometres from Vancouver. In July 2014, I boarded the Social Coast Action Bus -- a converted school bus used for social justice and environmental projects and drove with a group of activists to the blockade for the annual Action Camp. The camp brings together activists of all stripes for a week of workshops, shared meals, networking and volunteering.
