Should The U.S. Break Up The Big Banks?

In 2008, the U.S. Treasury committed 245 billion in taxpayer dollars to stabilize America’s banking institutions. Banks that were once “too big to fail” have only grown bigger. Was size and complexity at the root of the financial crisis, or do calls to break up the big banks ignore real benefits that only economies of scale can pass on to customers and investors? The debaters are Richard Fisher, Simon Johnson, Douglas Elliott, and Paul Saltzman. Before the debate, the audience at New York City's Kaufman Center voted 37 percent in favor of the motion and 19 percent against. Forty-four percent were undecided. After the debate, 49 percent supported breaking up big banks which is an increase of 12 percentage points and 39 percent opposed which is an increase of 20 points. Jerry Koch speaks on behalf of Luke O'Donovan

This week we spoke with Jerry Koch, an anarchist who was coercively imprisoned for refusing to cooperate with a federal grand jury in New York City, about Luke O'Donovan's legal case. From Luke's support website: "On New Year’s Eve of 2013, Luke O’Donovan attended a house party in Reynoldstown, a neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia. Luke was seen dancing with and kissing other men at the party. Later in the night he was insulted with homophobic slurs, and attacked by several people at once. Luke unsuccessfully attempted to escape, at which point several witnesses reported watching between 5 and 12 men ganging-up on Luke and stomping on his head and body, evidently with the intent to kill him. Luke was called a faggot before and during the attack. Throughout the course of the attack, Luke and five others were stabbed. Luke was subsequently imprisoned and charged with five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as well as one count of attempted murder. He spent two and a half weeks in jail without bond before being released under bond conditions that drastically affected his life. None of the other individuals involved in the altercation were charged." On August 12th of this year, Luke O'Donovan took a plea deal, which reduced his sentence of up to 110 years in prison to 2 years in prison with 8 years of probation alongside criminal banishment. Luke's supporters - as well as The Final Straw participants - believe that the choice to plead guilty was coercively enacted by the court systems and the state and Luke is thoroughly supported in having to have made that choice. We speak with Jerry Koch about the particulars of this case, what anarchist interaction with the court system can look like, as well as of his own case and his thoughts thereupon. We also speak about supporting folks who are incarcerated and the various forms that support could take, as well as things that folks doing support might consider. The Buttons Come Much Nearer

Peyote buttons? The sessions for Between the Buttons took place between August and December in the magic year of 1966 in Hollywood and in London. They were the last sessions with Andrew Loog Oldham as producer. The album contains the most purely British of the Stones' songs, playing out like a psychedelic English summer bristling with class conflict. It was Frank Zappa's favorite Stones album. He thought the social comment was relevant and he thought it was better than Sgt Pepper. (Brian belched in reply when Frank told him that.) It is now mostly forgotten -- Mick and Keith both claim to not care for it at all. Yet this wry oft-acoustic music (though dig the powerful guitar riff on Amanda Jones!) set off sparks for so many of us it deserves a deep listen on the Chill Room.

A yes vote would establish a separate Scottish state for the first time since 1707, when a need for economic security resulted in union with England, and the subsequent formation of the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Baird Throwing Canadian Special Operations Regiment into a Bubbling Cesspit in Iraq

Scott Taylor relies on his extensive experience in Iraq to counter Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird's committing military contingency to the Kurdish region in northern Iraq. Baird explains that the Canadians are not familiar with the complexity of the conflicts or the tribes in Iraq, Kurdistan, eastern Turkey. They are not ready for the "trip wires" they will encounter. This is not a good guy vs bad guy situation. It is a prison knife fight under blackout conditions. Baird is committing Canada to Pandora's Box from which the lid has long since been removed.

Durwood Zaelke and the Ozone Keepers

Remember the seventies? Remember feathered hair, pull-tab soda cans, debates about the thinning ozone layer? Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Durwood Zaelke, a policy advocate and environmental crusader who started working four decades ago to advance policy that would help preserve the ozone layer. Zaelke is the founder and President of the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD) based in Washington, DC and Geneva. He's a noted international environmental lawyer who received both an Ozone Protection Award and a Climate Protection Award in 2008 for his help in maximizing the climate benefits of the Montreal Protocol. Now, thanks largely to Zaelke and his organization, debates about the ozone layer are nearly as anachronistic as pull-tab cans and feathered hair. Nearly. Zaelke is still working on ozone protection, and, in line with the times, his organization s mission has broadened to include combating climate change. Stay tuned as Zaelke and host Alex Wise discuss in detail how the Montreal Protocol succeeded in making inroads to protect the ozone from hydrofluorocarbon pollutants, where the Kyoto Protocol has fallen short, and what needs to happen to make the next international climate change negotiations more productive.

Professor David Keith: A Case for Climate Engineering (ONE of TWO)

Harvard Climate Scientist David Keith makes the case that global warming and CO2 pollution have become so severe that dramatic measures have to be researched immediately and applied by 2020. He is suggesting spraying particles from airplanes into the stratosphere to create a haze that will reduce solar radiation. He names possible substances, including aluminum. However, his material of choice is sulfuric acid because it mimics volcanic explosions. He admits that such global intervention will damage the life protecting ozone layer, cause droughts and floods and will do nothing to resolve the expanding damage to the planet by still rising CO2 emissions.   He says that we need to artificially cool the earth because we are too slow to cut back on CO2 pollution. And that once begun, the spraying of aerosols cannot be stopped for the next 50 years because that in itself would be a dramatic shock to the world. Professor Keith denies that real live experimentation of spraying from airplanes is occurring – in spite of the observations of so-called chemtrails all over the world. He does however admit that spraying from airplanes is easy and inexpensive - all you need is an airfield and a couple of planes – and that such activity would be very difficult to detect.
