Why does the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' have its detractors?

Throughout July and August of this year, social media users were inundated with an almost constant stream of short videos featuring people from seemingly all walks of life dumping buckets of ice water on their heads. This trend, known as the ‘ALS Ice Bucket Challenge‘, went viral in an effort to promote awareness for the disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. It soon became a most unlikely pop culture phenomenon, with various celebrities, politicians and athletes performing the challenge and posting their videos online. On August 29th, the ALS Association announced that the total donations resulting from the challenge had exceeded $100 million. For this reason, it would appear that it would be difficult to criticize the campaign, but it certainly has not been met without any detractors.

Red Cross Humanitarian Awards 2014 in Winnipeg

The Canadian Red Cross has awarded two Manitobans, the 2014 Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year and Young Humanitarian of the Year awards. The recipients are Susan Lewis for Humanitarian award and Muuxi Adam for Young Humanitarian award. The annual Canadian Red Cross Power of Humanity luncheon, presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, on Sept. 10 at the Victoria Inn was where CKUW caught up with the two dedicated Manitobans for interviews. Susan Lewis has been helping Manitobans through the charitable organization the United Way for 40 years. She became campaign manager in 1974. Lewis became president of the United Way of Winnipeg in 1985, a position she has held ever since. Muuxi Adam works to help refugees in other parts of the world by building a school for refugee children in Kenya through the organization he co-founded, Humankind International Inc. In Winnipeg, Adam helps newcomers to Canada, especially youth, through the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba.

Obama's plans indicate the real goal is regime change in Syria

Gowans compares the shoddy rebuilding of Iraq to the huge Gulf State injections of cash to Iraq's ISIS enemies. U.S. 'trainers' for Iraq are really liasons to keep an eye on their weak client. Meanwhile, U.S.-backed rebels degrade and destroy Syria, a country that is fighting ISIS. Why is it okay in U.S. parlance for 'moderate' Wahabi extremists to cut heads in Syria, but not American heads in Iraq? Now, we witness U.S. media manufacturing consent for an attack on Syria by obfuscating who is doing the headchopping there. Hint: It's not the Syrian government.

Fast Food Workers Protests from Ferguson to NYC

Hundreds Arrested as Fast Food Workers Strike for Living Wage and Unionization featuring Jeanina Jenkins - a McDonalds Worker in Ferguson, Mo. who joined the NYC protests and was active in protesting the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO Thousands of fast food workers across 150 U.S. cities walked off the job recently and nearly 500 of them willfully committed civil disobedience as part of their protest and were arrested. In NYC 34 fast food workers were arrested. Protesting fast food workers have insisted that they were willing to do whatever it takes in order to earn union recognition and a higher wage. The NYC fast-food workers were also joined by over 20 St. Louis area fast-food workers, , including many from Ferguson, who were among the first in the country to join the Fight for $15, and have been on strike as many as six times. Jeanina Jenkins, a McDonald s employee in Ferguson, said I m willing to do whatever it takes because I m barely surviving on the $7.97/hr. I make at McDonald s. After everything that s happened here in my community during the last month, I know that if I don t stand up and fight for what I believe in, for what s right, that nobody else will and nothing will ever change.

Missing and Murdered Women and Youth Camp

The discovery Tina Fontain's remains in the Red River has once again galvanized the public to address the injustice of Canada's missing and murdered women. Some are demanding a National Inquiry, others are championing efforts to dredge the Red River. Wednesday, Sept. 10, CKUW News Director Michael Welch interviewed two ladies personally engaged in activism around this issue. Sue Caribou, the Aunt of missing woman Tanya Nepinak, and activist Kona Cochran. Michael also played audio from the Youth Camp at Memorial Park, which was set up to demand a National Inquiry.
