The first is with Ben Turk, anarchist, playwrite and prison abolitionist. Alex is a palestinian-american from Los Angeles, an activist in the BDS (That's boycott, divest and sanctions movement against the Israeli occupation of Palestine) and a student at Harvard's divinity school. We talk about decolonization, the uprisings in Ferguson, the struggle to liberate Palestine from the occupation by Israel and what solidarity and liberation might look like. Initially, when I (Bursts) contacted Alex for this conversation I was attempting to suss out what anarchists in Palestine had to say about the seige of Gaza by Israel, the national question, what Anarchism looked like to them and what how that might differ from the U.S. context. That's a conversation I'm still looking to have. Alex was kind enough to have a conversation but it went in a different, albeit worthwhile direction as is clear when one listens to the questions that I ask. While Alex is not as familiar with anarchism as we would have liked and we don't agree with everything that he says, we (The Final Straw) do feel like he had a lot of great stuff to say and we feel like the conversation was very much worthwhile. This week we turn The Q over to Lance at 100.7 KXTR as we discuss the (1985) Camp/Horror classic RE-ANIMATOR. In this H.P. Lovecraft tale, Herbert West is a Swiss scientist who has discovered a fluid which brings dead tissue back to life. After the suspicious death of his professor in Switzerland, West moves to Miskatonic University to continue his research. He involves fellow student Dan Cain and his fianc e Megan Halsey in his research by experimenting on their dead cat. Dan, fascinated by West's research, agrees to smuggle him into the hospital morgue with predictable results. Re-Animator was the first film in the Re-Animator series. The film has since become a cult film, driven by fans of Jeffrey Combs and H. P. Lovecraft. Entertainment Weekly ranked the film #32 on their list of "The Top 50 Cult Films" also ranked it #14 on their "The Cult 25: The Essential Left-Field Movie Hits Since '83... A lively discussion for sure, not to mention our Top 3 "Severed Parts!" in movies.
