Considered by many to be one of Williams more interesting perfomances it tells the story of father Lance Clayton, a man that learns the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy, and that being lonely is not necessarily the same as being alone⦠Lance Clayton (Robin Williams) is a man who has learned to settle. Heâs dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as a high school poetry teacher. His only son Kyle, (who wonât give him the time of day) is an insufferable jackass, with virtually zero friends, who seems to only care about violent video games and internet porn. One bright spot for Lance is Claire, the schoolâs adorable art teacher, with whom he has a blossoming relationship, but she doesnât want to get serious â or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating. Walking With Our Sisters is an art installation of about 1800 vamps or "uppers" honouring the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women. Communities are coming together accross turtle island in cermony, while this sacred bundle travels over the next 7 years. The installation opened on Friday September 19th at the Thunder bay Art Gallery and will be open until October 12.
For several months the community in Thunder Bay prepared to receive the bundle by consulting with local elders about traditional Anishinabeg ceremonial protocols, as wells as hosting community conversations, bead-ins, ceremonial teachings and film screenings.
Kara Louttit is a co-lead organizer for Walking With Our Sisters Thunder Bay and also a member of the Walking Wiith Our Sisters National Collective. Erin Marie Konsmo is the Walking With Our Sisters Youth Coordinator and Media Contact. They both spoke to the importance of fostering youth leadership and the ways that Walking With Our Sisters is providing space for youth to connect with culture. They also discussed the importance of meaningful engagement of two-spirit people and the ways that Walking With our Sisters honours missing and murdered two-spirit people.

#691 - Big Drugs, Big Money and Big Guns

We begin a new series this week, looking at the global drug trade and its key role in funding deep state groups. We begin with an expert on the Asian drug trade, Alfred McCoy. His 2010 talk, "Low-Intensity Conflict in the Drug Wars" focuses on opium production and its relationship to the proxy wars being fought in Afghanistan. We follow the heroin westwards to Turkey with a commentary by Sibel Edmonds who focuses on the nexus of the political and intelligence agency leaders, mobsters and drug traffickers which was brought to light by the "Susurluk scandal". This fateful 1996 car crash lead to the development of the phrase "Deep State" to describe the behind-the-scenes arrangements which were previously hidden from public view. While details of their operations remain unclear, they are increasingly understood to be more important to what really goes on than the for public consumption charade that is electoral politics.

She argues that any real solution to the climate crisis will have to overturn four aggravating factors: privatization, deregulation, "austerity," and "free-trade" deals.
These pillars of neoliberal economics well deserve overturning on their own (lack of) merits. Because of the climate crisis, transforming the global economy for the better now seems very possible.
An interesting and upbeat talk with many good specific examples.

Starboard Value, a hedge fund continuing to increase its control over Darden, just released a 300 page presentation on the future of Olive Garden, franchising out the company, increasing part-time scheduling, andthousands of lay-offs.Starboard Value and Darden Restaurants have continued to ignore the requests of a petition, singed by thousands of Darden employees to meet with leadership from both the hedge-fund and restaurant company. The petition also calls attention to problematic labor practices, including the company s elimination of auto-gratuities on large parties, unpredictable scheduling, and wages unable to sustain a family. Darden Restaurants Inc employs more than 130,000 people across the U.S. The company s annual shareholders meeting is confirmed to take place on October 10th in Orlando, Florida. Employees are planning direct action in New York City before the shareholders meeting .

Eliminating NY s Tipped Sub-Minimum Wage

Marking a new front in the fight for fair pay for low-wage workers in NY a new coalition of women s leaders, food delivery workers, and low-wage tipped workers are calling for an end to the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers by the Cuomo administration s Wage Board charged with recommending an increase in the state s tipped sub-minimum wage. A new report by NELP finds that a Wage Order eliminating the tipped sub-minimum wage would benefit an estimated 229,000 low-wage tipped workers. The minimum wage for thousands of tipped food service workers remains stuck at just $5.00/hr. (tipped hotel workers earn slightly higher at $5.65 per hour). In many states the tipped minimum is far lower.
